DCOM 10010 and 10016, plus I did see a warning which referred to facebook - name resolution for the name https://www.facebook.com timed out after non of the configured DNS servers responded.

Every one gets Dcom, update, and time sync errors. They do fail, or you lost/powered off at the wrong moment. they normally work at some other time. Dcom is one that always hangs around.

DNS is ok, but suggest your isp cant provide it quick enough, pc or router is misconfigured, or your traffic is going through a proxy at a particular moment. if it is a good few times....

    1) Check browser for proxy... firefox>configuration>options>Advanced>network> under the Connections entry, press settings>configure proxies to access the internet AND select 'No proxy'.
    2) dos prompt, type ipconfig /all
you are using wifi? You should get something similar to this below but should have 2 DNS servers, often one "Ethernet adapter Ethernet:", no TAP adapter etc.
    https://www.iplocation.net/ipconfig
    AS per above the "DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1" your numbers should belong to your isp. as per example below
    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=talktalk+dns+settings

Above all ok, but have loads of dns? then it suggests doo-doo isp. check DNS speeds here https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm, but you will probably will want to use your isp's, opendns, or google dns.

As others have said, you want to go to MCAfee site and download the uninstall program, then uninstall it. Often unistalling via the Applications uninstall is not good enough.

Put something else on until a fix (new version) becomes available... if you love McAfee that much and have abundance of cash to fork out every year for what many think as doo-doo:)

I use Avira, but Comodo, AVG, Avast and most others are also good. They are all free versions I use.

you need to check (read a weeks worth of red and yellow) in event viewer.

Also download processExplorer. this shows hidden stuff too, plus in one column is called 'VirusTotal' and checks if the site if that your app may contain a virus. The number turns red and often a rating of 2/57 is nomally a false positive. it also allows you to kill the process, but it will start up as normal again when you reboot the pc. do note down the path and rename the file, instead of deleting, but if you delete the wrong file you may have difficulty so google the name first. Most of the company names should be microsoft or intel, not blank. Examine processes whos path is not c:\windows\??? and asky why these are running, but some may be mouse and graphics drivers.

To be fair, with laptops and slowness and corrupt files, I would think along the lines of hard disk failure/child dropping it/being dumped on the table while powered on, but these should show as disk sector errors in event viewer too.

I have removed Mcafee and put on Avira

I have put on Avira Scout and all websites seem to be fine on there - still not ok on chrome and firefox. I couldn't even load google onto chrome even when I reinstalled it.

Had a quick look at process installer but was not sure what to look for and there was no column showing virus total

backup your bookmarks and passwords etc. for the browsers. uninstall them both and reinstall again, as you have had spyware etc. Restoring may restore the problems too, so just restore bookmarks and passwords

for process explorer look at this and follow the few instructions. I chose Epic browser as an example

I'm still not finding the column for virus total. I have clicked and opened the path column where there are some error opening processes.

in processExplorer, click on help > About> I have version 16.12

Also in processExplorer, click on Options>Select Virus Total.com> may as well tick both entries, if not already ticked.

You have to tell me again what is wrong with the browsers, what is not working and what you get.

Also who is your isp and what were you Dns settings?

On process explorer I saw that systemsettings.exe was showing as suspended.

Now, I have no idea what this meant but I looked on Google and one thing it said regarding systemsettings.exe was to run resmon.

I have done this and it showed that rapport was showing the highest usage? Not sure if my terminology is correct.

I've deleted this from my programs - I have been running this for a long time as an extra security layer for my online bank accounts.

I still don't understand why this didn't affect my laptop while out of the house, but I can now get into all websites on firefox and google.

Do I need to do something about systemsettings.exe being suspended?

I'm so grateful to you bluesnake for being so patient with me and to everyone who has taken the time to respond.

I now have to wait and see if my laptop issues (slowness and freezing) are resolved, but things are looking positive so far

Hi, I did click on Options and virus total.com was not there.

My browsers were timing out - today I couldn't even get google to load on google chrome. It was just timing out. My ISP is BT, and I was showing just one DNS setting.

Hopefully this is all irrelevant now as all appears to be ok as you will see with my previous post

    thanks again

Took me a while to realise what you meant :o, that is really spooky

I have had a little bit of problem with MSE since I used the fix from the McAfee forums don't know if connected but on IE every time I post I can no longer scroll up and down the page I get stuck. Could move elsewhere on MSE if there was a link to click like for new page etc and then it would be ok again. Have gone over to Chrome and it's all fine. May have just been totally random that started to happen. Not had any other problems on either browser today but MSE is the only forum I post on.

I can't get over how much faster my laptop is running in a long time makes me wonder what the Analytics SDK program was actually doing.

    1) download https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processexplorer.aspx the very old versions did not support virusTotal

    2) I have a strange setup. I do not expect you to have suspended software, or a similar software or configuration to me - it was just for informational purposes only. That is my systemsettings.exe, not yours and is a windows program :)

    3) One DNS setting is not good. This is usually automatically set by the router, but lets change it.

Do more or less this, but I want you to mix some numbers up
    https://www.howtogeek.com/164981/how-to-switch-to-opendns-or-google-dns-to-speed-up-web-browsing/
    Put in these values below.

    4) So all is set up. Everything is working perfect. you are the only one in the house surfing AND it is not between the hours of 5pm to 11pm go here and do a speed test and remember the results.

You should get something like this below, but at peak times BT may be oversubscribed
