sfc/scannow has found some corrupt files that it was not able to repair.

I have had a look at the CBS log file but have no idea what to do next - I think it is beyond me to deal with this

    1) Create new user account, login, run programs, see if same problems exist.

    2) Boot into Safe Mode with Networking, see if same problems exist.

    3) Run msconfig, gradually disable Services & Startup items, disable few items at a time, reboot, see if same problems exist.
(Hide Microsoft services, do not disable those)

I know I don't have the same problems with my guest account, only mine at the moment.

I could create another account for myself

Possibly pointless but you able to try it on a friends wireless network and see if the issues are still present.

Frogletina, because you are running McAfee this stuck out for me as I have been having problems with my browsers hanging and not being able to access McAfee either.

I opened task manager ( by using CTRL ALT DEL) and noticed there was a process called Analytics SDK that I have never noticed before using a lot of resource.

On googling I stumbled across this McAfee thread, seems an update few weeks ago started a memory leak problem.

    https://community.mcafee.com/thread/97481?start=0&tstart=0

The fix is in posts 36/37, I did it yesterday and it does seem to work albeit be a temporary fix until McAfee release an update to fix the issue. In fact in general things are a lot faster for me than they have been for a while.

My DD who is away at uni had also been getting problems before me and we assumed it was her internet access she has tried the temporary fix tonight so we will see if it makes a difference to her too.

    1) Have a look in eventviewer, but not all red errors are system critical and real problems and many people will have some red ones. 'System' is the area you want to look through for say about a week.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfrQPpl3wPA

    2) recommend you back up your pc. A not as good alternative is to copy off all the files and data you want to keep. Doubt anything will go wrong, but just in case.

3)This could take many hours, especially if you have a faulty disk, and do not switch it off once you have started.

Log on to the Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer with the administrator account....

From the Start screen, click the Desktop tile.
Once on the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
From the displayed Charms bar, click Search.
From the Search pane that is displayed in the right, in the available field, type CMD.
From the displayed suggested applications list, right-click Command Prompt.
From the context menu that appears, click Run as administrator.
On the User Account Control confirmation box, click Yes to provide your consent to continue.
Once on the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type CHKDSK /F /R C: command to check the C: drive for errors, and fix them if detected.

Were there corruptions, and what type? What were the file names... if any were given?

    4) shutdown and startup again.

    5) you need the windows 8.1 installation DVD and put it in the drive.
No DVD, stole this from another post on this site https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

Once on the Administrator: Command Prompt window, you need to point to the WIM file of the Windows 8.1 RTM DVD to get the correct files: type but put the correct spaces in:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:wim:D:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

(where D: is your Windows DVD drive or mounted Win8.1 ISO

    6) shutdown and startup again. Then check for updates.

All going well this will have fixed the operating system, but does not check the other software installed

Thank you for this. I have been having problems tonight with not responding messages and freezing.

I have done the temporary fix as you have suggested and that has stopped that problem so far.

I still have the facebook problem, but that's still ok on Opera at the moment

As others have said, you want to go to MCAfee site and download the uninstall program, then uninstall it. Often unistalling via the Applications uninstall is not good enough.

Put something else on until a fix (new version) becomes available... if you love McAfee that much and have abundance of cash to fork out every year for what many think as doo-doo:)

I use Avira, but Comodo, AVG, Avast and most others are also good. They are all free versions I use.

you need to check (read a weeks worth of red and yellow) in event viewer.

Also download processExplorer. this shows hidden stuff too, plus in one column is called 'VirusTotal' and checks if the site if that your app may contain a virus. The number turns red and often a rating of 2/57 is nomally a false positive. it also allows you to kill the process, but it will start up as normal again when you reboot the pc. do note down the path and rename the file, instead of deleting, but if you delete the wrong file you may have difficulty so google the name first. Most of the company names should be microsoft or intel, not blank. Examine processes whos path is not c:\windows\??? and asky why these are running, but some may be mouse and graphics drivers.

To be fair, with laptops and slowness and corrupt files, I would think along the lines of hard disk failure/child dropping it/being dumped on the table while powered on, but these should show as disk sector errors in event viewer too.

    Thanks for these details

I shall look at these one at a time

I have gone into event viewer and I do have a large numbers of errors there,

DCOM 10010 and 10016, plus I did see a warning which referred to facebook - name resolution for the name https://www.facebook.com timed out after non of the configured DNS servers responded.

I've only just seen this reply.

I will deal with this tomorrow, as it is very late now. I will put on a new anti-virus. I only use mcafee as it comes as free from my ISP.
