Also the adviser used compressed air and said fan sounded fine.

You cannot use compressed air to clean it out. Yes it dislodges the fluff but only forces it into the fan which if you're lucky just shoves it back on the grille leaving you back where you were in a few hours or if you're really unlucky blocks it and stops it from turning and eventually knackers it. The only way to clean them is to take them apart.

Can you post a picture of the underside of your laptop? It may just be that you've removed the screws but it needs more force to remove than you're happy using to take the cover off.

Currys won't have a clue-did they suggest that it needed a new motherboard, which is their usual cure- all?
Take it to a proper independent PC repair shop if you can't get the back panel off.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

uninstall McAfee Antivirus & firewall - (Avast is free)
reboot router/test internet access with wired ethernet when wireless fails
    Malwarebytes scan (free)
    chkdsk scan c
reinstall Chrome/Opera/Firefox or use internet explorer
create (and test with) a new user account

reinstall Windows and Office and data

Thank you for this detailed information - I have done the Malwarebytes scan but not the other things. I did try to do a restore but I hadn't taken off the anti-virus.

I will be seeing my son today and I will see whether he can remove the back of it. I was a bit worried to use much force with it.

Curry's didn't advise anything as to them it was working fine - as it was when I was there. I will be visiting my daughter's house today so I will see how it works there. I was surprised that it worked so well when I was at Curry's.

Try connecting it to your router by ethernet, not wi-fi
  • Could I jump in here please as I have an issue with a slow running laptop?

I have AVG but looking at the processes it seems that McaFee is also installed. Does AVG have a firewall? Or do I need to keep the McAfee firewall? Or should I uninstall every McaFee process including the firewall?

At my daughter's house and my laptop is working fine. My son says he needs to see the problem at my house (later tonight) and my son in law is convinced that I need to change the channel on my router.

Better to start your own thread rather than hijack someone else's.

    http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201412/20141211095443099/Win8_Manual_ENG.pdf

This is the Samsung manual for your laptop. If you can borrow a PC to download and print this PDF, you need pages 81 t0 83 inclusive (shows how to remove back covers) then 88 to 100 (shows how to recover Windows.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
