GMX and Mail.com (same company I believe, 1 & 1) don't allow IMAP/POP/SMTP access unless you upgrade at a cost. So they can't be taken seriously as a freemail provider, I can't use it with Thunderbird, can't use it with Apple Mail app on iPhone, and it can't even be linked to Gmail or Outlook.

Gmail or Outlook seem the best bet if your looking for a free email service. Outlook IMHO is slightly better as its now hosted on the Office platform, so you get Exchange-like features for free, which integrates nicely with Outlook email client, or indeed any Exchange capable email software.
Utter rubbish..........I've been using GMX IMAP for years....So it would seem that the inability to use it with Thunderbird etc. is down to your ignorance of the facts.

I've been using the service for ages and I've a large number of emails that I'd like to keep. I really hope they go out of business as a result of this.
Wow - they want to charge you some money to cover the cost of the service which they provide to you, and because of this you hope that they go out of business?!

I hope you don't get too much of a shock when you go to Tesco and they actually want you to pay for your groceries!

Nonsense -- I've used a free GMX account with IMAP and SMTP for years.

So it seems its only mail.com users that have to pay for IMAP access, I just assumed as mail.com was part of GMX, its a blanket policy. I did try to create a GMX account to see what the fuss was, but they don't seem to be allowing new sign-ups, and its been like this for a few days.

Probably didn't like Adblock? I'll try later without.

Yeah -- seems to be an AdBlock issue. Strange -- it worked fine before with AdBlock, but I don't use webmail anyway.
  • I use Thunderbird for a standalone place to host all our emails. I use Gmail and BT and have used my own domain when I had it. All emails are kept and deleted as necessary and all emails are readily available in one place.

Thunderbird is a client, not a host. The emails will be hosted on a server run by your email provider.

Hope that sorts it out for you. I'm using uBlock Origin with uBlock Origin Extra on Slimjet (A Chromium derivation).
