My .co.uk for 2 years is £16.78 inc VAT from Fasthosts - looks like it's on the expensive side!
Depends what you're paying for, does this include mail hosting? You shouldn't really be paying more than £7 for a basic .co.uk domain name.

I suppose it is hosting, but I don't have a web site, it just forwards my mail as BT refuses to handle it as it's classed as business even though it's just like fred@fredbloggs.co.uk

May have been mentioned, but if you have an Android device with google Play, you already have a Google account which can be a gmail account.
I use Outlook and gmail, but only gmail gets loads of Scandinavian !!!!!! scam.

Cheapest route to own domain + email hosting:

I use Namecheap for domains, but if its low cost email hosting your after, I'd recommend Polarismail who have accounts for just $12 a year for a basic package with 25Gb mailbox or $24 for a package to include email, contacts and calendar. https://www.polarismail.com/ or Tuffmail do something similar https://www.tuffmail.com/ starting at $15.

If you're paying for email hosting, then this isn't the "cheapest route"!

Why pay for email hosting instead of using a free service like GMail or GMX? Then all you have to pay for is the domain.

Your domain registrar may forward email to your GMX or Gmail account, but you are at the mercy of both your domain registrar's incoming email filtering & forwarding service AND Gmail's/GMX's incoming mail filters. The whole idea of getting your own email hosting is that your cutting out a whole load of forwarding, so your emails don't endure so many 'hops' along the way.

I have personal experience of this myself, when years ago I had my domain with 123-Reg, which then forwarded emails to my Hotmail account. This was a disaster as both services were randomly dropping emails and I had no idea if Hotmail or 123-Reg were the culprit.

Also, if someone sends an email addressed to you@domain.com, and you reply with you @ gmx.com, it doesn't look entirely professional, but this is my personal opinion.

One last thing to consider, unlikely as it is, if GMX or Gmail throw in the towel, your stuffed, you'll have to email everyone to tell them your new email address. If you have a domain with email hosting, and your provider goes bust, you just quite simply change email hosting company, that way your email address never dies (as long as you remember to renew the domain). :)

Strange. I've been doing this for years and have never had a problem.

Of course. That's why you reply with your domain address in the "from" field.

No you won't -- you just set up an account with another provider and change the email forwarding on your domain. Again, correspondents will be unaware of any change.

I can't think of a single reason why you would pay for email hosting for a simple home-use account.

Another vote for using mail.com (for all the customisable names, used them for donkey's years) and gmail.com.
