I’m in need of a new car and having recently started driving to work (90-100 mile round trip) I’m investigating EV options and currently favouring an e-Golf.

Any thoughts on the relative merits of PCP versus leasing would be much appreciated. The whole thing is making my head spin a bit!

    Thanks.

The e-Golf is fairly overpriced for what it offers. It's capacity will probably be OK for doing a 100mile journey, but have to bear in mind that at high motorway speeds, and on a wet cold day during winter, it might be quite close...

At the price of a e-Golf i would be much sooner looking at the likes of the Hyundai Kona or Kia e-Niro. Availability is very low though...think Hyundai have actually stopped taking orders on the Kona as the wait times are >12months.

I avoid new cars, and therefore avoid PCP/leasing. You can pay almost double for very little added value. Having said that, the used EV market is extremely buoyant due to increased demand and low supply. But I think it's a case of being patient and just waiting for the the right car at the right price.

Took me nearly 6months but I finally picked up a battery owned 41kWh Zoe to use as a cheap second car. Now I could have bought brand new, but was over £5k more than I paid for my used one, and could have got it on PCP, but then would have spent >£2k on interest charges. The only difference between my used and a new one is an extra year warranty (which is just £289 to extend for a year), and the numbers on the plates and odometer...given it only had 5,000 miles it's practically brand new anyway!

Likewise, I could have leased one at about £2,500 and £250 per month. But then I would be stuck in that 3yr contract and would have paid close to what I paid for my used model with nothing at the end of the 3yrs....

Argh, this is all so frustrating... Time has come to flog the wife's old Golf Diesel and I'd like to replace it with a long range EV, TM3 or similar but when will they ever sell them here... :( Not interested in Leaf, Zoe etc...

2020 if your waiting on the cheaper Model 3. Some US customers will only paying $27k for the base Model 3 after incentives. I say 'base' but still 220 miles of EPA range (way more than the Leaf), 5.6 0-60 time, and Autopilot hardware.

This pretty much means US demand will be crazy, the Tesla Model 3 will end up as the best selling car in the US this year, if Tesla can build enough may even overtake truck sales.

So itll come to the UK, but until US demand is met.

OK, this surprised me ..... :

New VIN Registrations Reveal That The RHD Tesla Model 3 Is Coming!

..... and my first thought was Japan, also Australia, India, Africa etc etc, but the article seems to be stressing the UK. So 2020 seems a safe bet, but things could happen sooner, perhaps .... I don't know?

Maybe they'll stop at 2, and start a fight.

We have our Kona on order still, with delivery expected February next year. I imagine Tesla might be delivering RHD mid spec variant of the Model 3 by then. If they were available right now, we would more seriously consider changing our order.

All good advice but I for me the luxury of waiting will come at a price (getting my 16 year old Lupo through its MOT and carrying on driving it when it’s really not the car for my new commute) hence wanting to sort out a new car now.

I’m also aware that waiting would bring more cars with a longer range to the market but the e-Golf would cope with my commute and the cost is what I used to spend on fares (but it’s true that I could take a loan to buy a used EV).

I know a lot of the appeal is how safe and solid and comfortable it felt when I went for a test drive (I was much more comfortable in it that I was sitting in the Leaf but haven’t do much as sat in a Zoe) and that I think it would make my drive less stressful.

It's a good point. I meant just waiting 6-12months and keeping a keen eye on the market so you get a good idea of what is priced well and what fits your needs well. Buying used at a good price can be many many magnitudes cheaper, and put you in a stronger position when you decide to change cars in the future.

It could cope the majority of the time, but it would not be unreasonable to expect ranges of 85/90miles if you are regularly wanting to travel at 70MPH in the depths of winter...

Certainly agree with the comfort side. As stipulated I have a Zoe, but I only use it for short journeys. I commute by train. Whilst I did drive it 70odd miles back from the dealer and found it enjoyable, I don't think I would enjoy daily commutes of 100miles in it!

If you can wait, I would much sooner be looking at the Kona or e-Niro. I think it's increased ranged does far more to justify it's price point, and will really squash any notion of range anxiety. Sure the Lupo can hang on another year ;)

Feel free to PM if you want to discuss PCP finance or leasing btw. I don't want to derail this thread!

Thanks. I'm only seeing the start of the article, but it left me a bit confused. They suggest UK prices will be around 25% higher, which sounds normal, and I thought expectations in the UK were for a dollar to pound swap, so the $35k car being around £35k.

In fact taking their comparison of "$35,000 (£26,500)", that would be approx £33k.

So I don't get how they convert it to £50k unless they are looking at higher spec current (Europe) deliveries? Also I assume these prices are before the recent price cuts.

Kinda irrelevant to me, I have to admit, as I can't afford the lower price, certainly not the higher, anyway.

The article says the UK model will be better equipped than the base US one which is why it will be nearer £50k. I don't know how much of this is speculation and how much is fact!

Don't US headline prices tend to ignore sales tax? So you're looking at an extra 0-10% (depending on which State) on the US prices as well
