If you are in receipt of Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance and Disability Living Allowance these may be affected if you go abroad. Short absences for holidays abroad do not affect most benefits. Going abroad is usually defined as going outside the United Kingdom
Temporary absence
Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance can be paid for up to 13 weeks of a temporary absence, but special arrangements apply for certain people.
If you are a carer in receipt of Carer’s Allowance and accompany the disabled person, the entitlement may continue for up to 13 weeks, as long as the disabled person qualifies for:
* Attendance Allowance
* Constant Attendance Allowance!

That was 2 years ago, things have changed since!
Yes that was 2 years ago, the telephone conversation I had was in answer to a poster two years ago, on here, who stated that you had to fill in a 15 page form to notify the DWP of holidays abroad.
As we all know two telephone calls to two different call handlers at the DWP will give two different answers, I posted my call concerning the answer I got.
I posted that in answer to someone who stated that you have to notify the DWP of ANY holidays abroad, which has not changed, you do not.
That was straight from the horses mouth as they say.0 -

But gingerale....ask questions on here and you will get many different answers, for different reasons, make a note of what you read but then call the DWP and ask them what the outcome will be if you do decide to go for 6 weeks.

When I was employed by the DWP there were many workers who worked 'term time' they often had the entire school holidays, mid July through to early September off, not sure if that is 6 weeks but close, they still do.
We also worked 'flex' hours, I could go in one hour earlier every day I worked (three days a week) for one month and accrue extra annual holiday entitlement, therefore at the end of one month I had managed to get two extra days annual leave, do that for three months (as I did) and hey presto 6 extra days leave to be added to the yearly total.
So in answer to your question 'what job you have where you can take 6 weeks continuous leave' Public Sector for one, sure there are others.0 -

Term time working isn't taking 'leave' when you want.

I work in the public sector, get 7 weeks A/L and pretty much book leave when I need it. in addition I work flexi and can accrue 2 days a month easily.

Well I did, and people I am still in touch with still can and do take 6 weeks continuous leave.
And actually what she said was...
'I work full time and have no problem taking extended periods of time off'
she may take unpaid leave, she may have an agreement with her Employer re her husbands illness, she might even work in a family business, who knows, what she asked was what this forum thought was the best to do re advising the DWP.
Think she expected abuse and comments re 6 weeks leave and not someone asking what Employer allowed 6 weeks leave.
Go figure, surprised again.0 -
I once took 8 weeks leave. My employer was happy for me to save up some holiday from the previous year and there was enough notice to arrange the workload around the time off. Obviously it depends on the type of employment (I was in a senior position and work was quite project based).
Back to the question, DLA is OK for up to 13 weeks. ESA can only be claimed for 4 weeks when going abroad so you will need to declare this. On your return, as it will be within 13 weeks of closing your claim you can request the new claim is 'linked' to the old one which will put him back in the support group with no additional medical. This is assuming they even close your claim, it may be that they simply don't pay for 2 weeks.0
