Cant help agreeing with this. Dealing with DWP is excruciating in my experience (many years ago) and less contact the better imo. Its 6 weeks, not 6months. Go have fun and not worry about it

op - By all means take what advice you need from these posts but please dont explain how you can take extended leave, its not anyone elses business but your own and not relevant to your question ..... people just love to be nosey!! (aka jealousy)

Thank you for this. i knew i would get abuse luckily I am thick skinned. We don't claim anything we are not entitled to and my OH was in receipt of DLA long before he stopped working anyway

Is there anything in his ESA claim that would lead them to think that he wouldn't be capable of such a long trip?

I have heard of people who have had problems getting ESA because photos of them on FB seem to contradict the claims they are making on their forms.

No he is fine for making the trip. Unless there is a miracle i cant see hi bungee jumping in New Zealand or surfing in Australia unless you can strap on a wheelchair.

Be careful when you go out to oz as they may ask you how you are going to support yourself like money wise for such a long trip away.

Make sure you have plenty acsess to cash if needed

You don't currently claim anything you are not entitled to. No.

The very fact that you made this post shows to me you are basically honest.

Either way, have a good holiday.
  • I will throw into the mix - what would happen if you intended to return within 4 weeks but due to unforeseen circumstances (which can be anything at all) you had to extend the trip by an extra 2 weeks? Presumably some on here would expect you, whilst sitting on a beach in Oz, telephone the DWP to tell them that there is a delay in getting home - the DWP don't do email????

No. The law requires changes to be reported promptly, that being defined as within 28 days. So it could be done upon return.

As the OP is obviously concerned about doing the right thing, surely it's better to report their intentions, as two week's benefit is not worth the stress of worrying and possibly spoiling the holiday.

Not that it is any of your business what my job is but i am fortunate enough to be able to either buy more holidays or take unpaid leave or carry over 2 weeks holiday from this years entitlement. The sort of perks you get when working full time for the same company for 16 years!

huh? Do you think i'll somehow track you down?

Either way - my point was many businesses would consider someone surplus to requirements if they could operate without them for 1/8 of the year.

So on that basis there is no need to tell anyone if the holiday is for 4 weeks if the intention could be that they will return for a day but change their mind whilst out there and make it 6 weeks and then have 28 days from when they return to tell the DWP?
