  • I'd like to have some positive goals for 2017 so here we go...

    1. now I'm recovering from my op I would like to increase my exercise

    2. lose half a stone in 12 months and keep it off so my weight would be under 11 st this time next year

    3. finish decorating my bedroom. Due to health/mobility it takes a long time but I have a week booked off in May so hope to be able to get all my skirting boards painted in a week (usually manage one a day)

    4. worry less. I need to try and find some self help guides to help me control my anxiety

    5. eat more healthily - more fruit and veg and continue to avoid takeaways & cook a cheap quick tasty alternative

    6. find a new hobby ... problems with my hands & grip means I find it difficult to cut/sew etc but I am determined to find something that does not cost the earth

    Happy New Year everyone

I have some health/ mobility issues too and also have to decorate at a very slow pace and with help. However I do manage various crafts- often with adaptations. I can't do anything for long or too much but swap between craft tasks that hurt different bits of the body!
I wouldn't be able to knit with needles but have just started knitting on a loom (you can also try circular needles). You could look at zentange as a cheap way to destress- you draw simple, repetitive patterns and only need a pen and paper. Sewing wise I find it easier to use a rotary cutter and I have my machine at kitchen work surface height and stand to use it for brief periods as I have the best posture this way.
I hope you find something suitable- for me the distraction and sense of purpose outweighs any additional pain!
There are lots of great resources for anxiety- including free apps for meditation or relaxation. Also lots on internet e.g. http://www.getselfhelp.co.uk

Still feeling positive this morning, in spite of being tired from late night. OH and I, and dear dog went for a walk in the rain through parkland and farmland of a big country estate (rights of way), we only saw 4 other people and really enjoyed the fresh air and peace and quiet. Also made 2 quiches and a mince tart this evening from leftovers. Pleased to have put a tick against 2 things on my list, which is printed and living in my new diary.

:) Hello another long time lurker here, hoping that by writing my aims for 2017 will help me stick to them!! Really need motivation to declutter the house , i have my own junk, my mums and my nanas but find it hard to let go, got to get rid of some this year , i need to start putting myself first instead of last at home, get control of my food shopping , beyond a joke now, and spend more time with my sister having fun and making memories as shes quite poorly , just a few things for now , nice to meet you all.:o
  • Jellie thanks for the advice re craft work and the link which is really useful ...I've been looking at this morning as I've been awake since 3.30am :o but I have done my online banking and meal plan for the week, so I have at least tried to be productive ;)

My list of aims for 2017 1. To get a little job - no more than 16 hours as I do a lot of volunteering and also take my disabled sister out. I would like to be able to have a couple of decent holidays but specialist ones for disabled are very expensive. 2. To get fitter and spend more time outdoors. I have a bike but can't use it at the moment because of a shoulder problem. I can walk though and will look into getting a small allotment. 3. To lose weight - I have around 3 stones to lose, but will aim for an average half pound a week meaning that I will lose 26lb or nearly 2 stones this year - achievable. 4. Stop buying and stop wasting. Food, clothing, money, things. As soon as I grow out of an item of clothing it will go to the charity shop so I won't be able to put the weight back on. 5. To finish one unfinished craft project every two months (some are quite big projects). 6. I would like to have some work done on my flat - not sure yet if I will try the DIY route or get someone in to decorate. A good thing about many of these activities is that I will be in the company of good friends when I'm doing them - exercising, Slimming World perhaps, craft group. I am very lucky.

Also, my most important thing is to not compare myself to others. So what if other people can spend £30 on food shopping for a family of 4, whereas i spend £100 on a family of 3?
They are not me, they dont have the same income, budget, family, ideas or life as me. So why do i feel like i am a failure unless i spend a tiny amount on food?
I like eating organic sometimes, i dont like shopping regularly in Aldi or Lidl...that doesnt make me a failure.[/QUOTE]

I think this is quite key, I often look at the figures given on the monthly budget and it scares me to get near them. luckily I'm a stubborn cow and will say what I can do. I think the trick is to find where your family will sit

newbies will find numbers quite intimidating and give up, I know everyone here is lovely but at first they can be overwhelming
