dear caterina, im so sorry you are having such an awful time. christmas seems to be full of high expectation and when it falls short everyone feels sort of let down. do whatever makes you feel happy and content. dont be worried by crying, that is release and good for you. i learnt many years ago trying to please everyone isnt possible so i please myself!! i see all relatives and friends before christmas, and my husband and i have no visitors, so we eat whatever we fancy and do as we please! looking like curry for lunch today!! bless you. xx0

Dear monnagran and t14cy t, thank you both very much for your kind and comforting words, and for the wisdom.
I am so envious, curry! Enjoy some on my behalf too! Although really tbh I have no complaints re food, my mother is very relaxed about what we eat and what time, if we are hungry we do, if not we don't. Just as well my sister is not here, she tends to impose her ways and tastes. I am quite sure that one of the reasons she stayed away is because I told her in no uncertain terms No Meat No Fish and only basic simple things, no big fancy dinners. She is the sort of person who lives to eat, takes a lot of pictures of food and puts them on FB. Each to their own, but I don't understand the need for that!
Just woke up from a good refreshing sleep, DH still fast asleep but breathing clearly, am delighted to report. I will leave him to sleep all day if he needs to.
Very soon I will emerge from the bed and will treat myself to a shower. My mother has the best shower in the world, strong jet, lovely large rose, nice products. It's a pleasure to get washed here! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Just finished a session working in the local sorting office - Depressing seeing all those cards (over 5,000,000) going to all parts of the world, and not one for me. Then there were the ones without stamps on, which will eventually get to the recipient (if they pay the fee). A few with a stamp on, but no address or an incomplete one.
Now that it is all over, I sit here in a cold house with the wind howling around outside. Mum is dead and buried, Sis is 60 miles away with a broken foot, so just me and the cat. Tins of baked beans in the cupboard, pizzas in the freezer, but no turkey or mince pies in the house - Quite frankly, the seasonal "cheer" just makes me want to scream and strangle someone.... Maybe one of those closet christians that come out this time of year and go carol singing (badly).Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

(((((FreeBear))))) sorry you are so lonely, thinking of you. I am not closet, am a fully paid up Christian, albeit of the non-preaching type, I could serenade you with carols, badly and with a croaky voice! Although there is a thread here, the Daily a Thread, where our dear tru puts a carol a day, you might want to visit it. Her carols are very heartwarming.
I am concerned about why is your house cold? Please look after yourself and reach out if you are in need of heat, I don't want to make assumptions as I know nothing about you, but I hope you will find a way to get at least some warmth. xxFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -

Um. I'll make do with Judas Priest turned up to 11 thanks... Also got a helping of Whitesnake, Meatloaf, and Prokofiev - Might even throw in Ride of The Valkyries at midnight
As for the cold, It is simply because the heating isn't turned on - Costs too much to heat the whole house for one+cat.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Wow FreeBear good choice of music, at least the ones I know, Meatloaf, Prokofiev and Wagner, I might take a leaf out of your book and listen to some reinvigorating loud music!
Reassured that the unheated house is your choice, I hope you have a good remainder of the Christmas break and get some joy out of it.Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Hi Caterina, Just read all of these posts and hope that you are feeling a lot brighter now. I think that sometimes we expect too much of Christmas due to the relentless cheerful images that we see at every turn. I'm afraid for me Christmas also contains a lot of sad memories and I know that there'll be others who are in the same boat. Let's just get the day over eh? and focus on a brighter new year. Sending a big hug to everyone who needs it
Can I take the opportunity to mention The Silver Line service to anyone who'd like to use their services or volunteer to be a friend? https://www.thesilverline.org.uk/
(I misunderstood the headline of your post when I first read it Caterina and think that others might have too) ' The Silver Line is the only free confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.'
I understand that the volunteer friends offer to make a phone call to someone for half an hour, once a week. I've only heard about it recently and think that it's a great idea. I hope that you don't mind me pinching your thread but I know what a thoughtful person you are and I'm sure that you'll forgive me.:)
Chin up and have a lovely time with OH on your little trip. Hope that you are both well enough to enjoy it, Eenymeeny xThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Please and Thank You are the magic words;)0 -
Eenymeeny I am delighted that you post about the Silver Line and humbled thinking how many people are really and truly alone. For me it was a dark moment last night when I reached out, for so many it is a permanent situation. Thank you for the healthy reminder, it helps me count my blessings and be grateful for what I have. I hope you had a great day today xFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
