Coping with unwarranted criticism when you're doing a favour or something helpful

  • 1. One girl said every other time she cooks tea, her husband has something negative to say about it, just slight and trivial, but he seems unable to eat his tea more than twice without making a negative comment about it

My family (husband and kids) used to moan about my cooking. Every single day, so about two years ago I stopped. My husband now cooks most days and my middle son has become a very good cook. My eldest (who is 18) uses his money buying take away pizza and going to my parents to pick up tins of baked beans. He occasionally cooks but is very fussy.

I started cooking again recently and it quickly started up again. So I've stopped again.

I don't necessarily think I'm a bad cook because its is just one person at every meal who complains. And its usually about what I've cooked, not what it tastes like. I always said I was not going to cook separate meals for different people, but even when I do this at least one person will complain.

In my family's case, I think its more to do with one up man ship amongst themselves. They are very competitive with each other. If I've cooked one son's favourite meal, the others think they have to complain (even though I would be doing their favourite another night).

Anyway, my advice. If someone is always complaining then just stop altogether and give your help to someone who appreciates it.
