Twice as many vehicles now being clamped for non-payment of tax

Just watched the chief executive of the DVLA (BBC News), one Oliver Morley, talking about motorists as though they are dirt on the street. This overpaid head of a parasitic organisation, who couldn't even dress properly for the occasion, had nothing but contempt for people who forget to tax their vehicles. He likened the lack of a tax disk to not having a disk on your TV to remind you about that other bunch of scroungers at TV Licensing.

Whatever the rights or wrongs of doing away with tax disks, the high handed approach of DVLA, which is clearly driven from the top by this guy who came across as an arrogant chump, is not working. Where next for Mr Morley? Given the total ineptitude of the organisation he drags though the sewers, I expect he'll be a shoe in for the head of HMRC, or perhaps the Border "Force".

What annoys me about "the modern world" is the way ordinary citizens are villified, fined heavily and put through the mangle for simply ... forgetting, not realising ...

If somebody sets out to get away with something, that's one thing, but there are so many "traps" these days when it comes to anything vehicular. I've actually stopped leaving the house and stopped parking the car where I'm not familiar... as I fear a parking fine simply for "not spotting a sign", or "not quite grasping what a mark meant", or "getting held up in the till queue for 30 seconds longer than my allotted parking allowance.

Might as well all stay in, sell the car, buy a horse.....

When I taxed my car last year I got a reminder in the post and used the reference number to tax on line, has this reminder been stopped ?

    I shouldn't think so. What's your point?

No but people move house and it gets forgotten. Seems like DVLA go for the soft targets as do the police; and the number plate cloners and illegal sellers of number plates get away without any bother or cost.

Out of interest, what happens if you have a low value car and decide to just leave it clamped and not pay the fine? Does your car get taken and you taken to court for it anyway or do they just seize the car and leave it at that?

Reminders are still sent out. I think the point is there's no excuse, if you've done the legal stuff like inform them if you move house etc then no problems, I don't need an piece of paper on my windscreen to tell me when my VED is due, the reminder may give me a reference number, however I know it's due end of January, I've got a mind like a sieve and even I can remember the VED due date.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

Let's just do away with them then. I'm sure if we have no requirement for a driving licence and no revenue raised for excise duty they county will be a much better place.

It's not like the last day of January isn't the 31st some years.

The question mark at the end of my post means I was asking a question, why do you believe I'm making a point ?

I think the point is that people forget, and then........

    Nothing happens

    No reminder

    No red bill

Just eventually a huge fine drops through the door.

I have to pay my tax the day that I get it, because otherwise I would put the reminder down and I know that I would never think about it again.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
