Let's just do away with them then. I'm sure if we have no requirement for a driving licence and no revenue raised for excise duty they county will be a much better place.

I would certainly do away with one third of their operation. We need cars registered and drivers licensed, but we don't need vehicle tax (like we don't need TV licences). There are better possibilities. However, that was not the point I was making. I was getting at the high-handed arrogant approach of these civil servants who treat their wage payers like scum. This was exemplified by the interview with Morley on the BBC.
  • Set up a direct debit.

Then the DVLA will automatically take the payment when it is due and, provided you have enough money in your account, you do not risk a fine.

I can guess from that you mean employ unpaid revenue collectors same as they do with vat.

I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

But where would you get the 6 billion you would lose?

Car tax - put it on fuel. TV licence - pick it up automatically with the council tax. Job done. Two massive bureaucracies bite the dust, and not a moment too soon. Yes, I know there are arguments against both of these suggestions, but to me, both of them are common sense.

No, see above. Put it on fuel.

VED on fuel is fine as only vehicle users will ever pay it but TV Licence on council tax would penalise people who have absolutely no interest in watching tv.

Slightly off topic but I meant it would be collected alongside council tax by the local council, and if you didn't have a TV you could claim a refund.
