Twice as many vehicles now being clamped for non-payment of tax

Another example of a lack of personal responsibility taken by people these days, it's not my fault guv, it's someone else's!0

Well just to buck the trend....
If you don't pay for your VED and get clamped, whose fault is that?
It is your fault for not taxing your car and not organinsing your life properly (or being an adult as it is commonly known).
Personally I am glad people get clamped for non payment, why should I have to pay when others think they should get away with it?
There is no excuse with DD facilities available and the reminders you get beforehand.
The excuse of "i've just moved" is not really an excuse, it is not difficult to change your adress on the v5 and even if that doesn;t come through in time, you can still tax your vehicle. This must also only apply to a very small amount of people.
Yes. We know. Mentioned countless times here and elsewhere, mainly by those who live perfect lives and never forget anything. The point of my original post was to draw attention to the appalling attitude of the DVLA towards this issue. This was portrayed particularly well by some guy called Oliver Morley (head of DVLA - or "Chief Executive" as they like to call themselves) who, like lots of contributors here, had a sneering attitude towards those who've fallen foul of the system. Unfortunately, the BBC being what it is - bloody incompetent when it comes to interviewing the likes of Morley - let him get away with it unchallenged.0 -

If somebody sets out to get away with something, that's one thing, but there are so many "traps" these days when it comes to anything vehicular. I've actually stopped leaving the house and stopped parking the car where I'm not familiar... as I fear a parking fine simply for "not spotting a sign", or "not quite grasping what a mark meant", or "getting held up in the till queue for 30 seconds longer than my allotted parking allowance.
Might as well all stay in, sell the car, buy a horse.....
Just make sure it doesn't crap in the street. Your local civic bouncers will be after you for that as well.0 -
There seems to be more than one issue arising here. The first is whether we should have VED or not. If we move it to the cost of fuel it might have some consequences such as costing drivers in rural areas and commercial drivers very much more.
As for fines if you don't pay perhaps because people forget then
a. there are reminders sent out. If you haven't update addresses you might not get one.
b. you can, as has already been suggested, set up a direct debit
c. you can use a calendar reminder electronic or manual
If you can't/won't do any of the above then I can't see why any sympathy is needed. None of that means that DVLA can't do better than they currently do and, of course, scrapping VED would still leave DVLA existing for licences.
My solution is to make sure my address is up to date, have an electronic reminder and pay it online. I don't think this is beyond anyone and I welcome those who won't do anything sensible being fined heavily and inconvenienced.
In the future I suppose road tolls might replace the need for any of this.0 -

Who, in this day and age, has a perfect life?
Why shouldn't the DVLA be appalled at people breaking the law. Just like the HMRC are entitled to be appalled at tax dodging and the Police are appalled about criminality.
People aren't falling foul of a system, they are demonstraing there incompetence to organise there lives.
Sick of the "ain;t my fault, blame someoine else culture" we live in and ridiculous comments like the above only prove the matter further.
I can see the new year adverts.... "Have you messed up and need to blame someone else? Call us and we'll see if we can sue them for your own incompetence"Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0 -

I didn't say that. I said they had an appalling attitude, which is something different. I'm not sure if the news report (video) is available online, but it's worth a look if it is.0 -
Honestly, is it really so difficult to remember when the VED is due? Make a note in your diary, perhaps? Anyway, so long as you are careful to check that the DVLA have your current address, you do get a reminder.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0
