Going back to the point of the OP, I saw that interview as well, and the guy came across badly. He was dismissive and patronising - no reason why he couldn't have made the same points in a reasonable way.

Pity the BBC didn't ask him the obvious question - did no-one at the DVLA anticipate that compliance rates would fall when they got rid of the tax disc? It seems an obvious consequence, and a lot of people on here commented at the time that this was bound to happen. A small acknowledgement that the DVLA may to some extent have caused the problem themselves would have been welcome.

Yes, it is easy to set yourself reminders, but that isn't the issue.

They probably did realise that more people would "forget" but as long as they are getting fined and paying those fines then the DVLA won't be loosing any money so it's not a problem financially.

I'm glad the DVLA made the change and didn't say "well we better keep the tax discs because people are useless at personal organisation".

The issue is that people who are unable to organise to pay their tax on time shouldn't be responsible for a car. How do these same people manage to MOT their car on time every year when they don't even get a reminder letter?.

A good point. With the tax disk they were more likely to remember to tax their vehicle, and couldn't do so without a valid MOT, so they had to get it MOT'd as well. Now, more people are forgetting, so one must assume more people are also driving with expired MOTs. That's bad for everyone.
  • An update (The Telegraph), under the banner of 'Rewarded for Failure'

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/12/30/new-year-honours-reward-failure-civil-servants-behind-whitehall/

Oliver Morley, the chief executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, receives a CBE for “services to Public Sector Digital Services” despite the axing of paper tax discs which resulted in motorists inadvertently failing to keep their car tax up to date.

Yes, probably the same person who thinks all the other knuckle-dragging civil servants featuring in the list were also doing a good job.

Quite frankly I don't believe for one minute that the title of the thread is accurate. I think it's what the DVLA want us to believe. Scrapping the tax disc makes it easier for the hardened "tax dodgers" amongst us 'blend in'.

  • Why /how did a thread on car tax evasion/clamping morph into one complaining about people getting MBE's etc?
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
