At what point of criminality do you draw the line of it being socially acceptable reporting it / supplying evidence to the authorities if you have it ?

When I hit 50, I cast all morality aside ;)

If my dashcam witnessed a serious accident, then I would make the footage available, because what is left of my Moral Code believes that is Right.

If it is just someone going the wrong side of a KEEP LEFT island, pulling out 6 feet in front of me, turning left from the right hand lane, lane changing without indicating, talking on their mobile, eating a mars bar, overtaking me in a 30 when I'm doing an indicated 32 like I'm standing still, overtaking on a blind bend then I wouldn't bother. As stated, those are things that visible Police would deter/catch.

And no, I don't feel that if I don't report them now, they will do it again tomorrow and kill a whole column of nuns, sending baskets of kittens everywhere.

We can have a whole series of moral dilemmas:

Would you shop your brother/sister/spouse if you found out that they were the "Hit & Run" driver Police are looking for?
Would snitching stop them doing it again?

Would you snitch on a colleague who told you they were going to Syria to join ISIS?
    Would snitching save lives here?

Would you snitch on a colleague who goes home 5 minutes early if it didn't affect how much work you have to do?

Would you snitch if they stole a pen, or stole photocopies by using the office copier for private use?

    Why not?

Well I did say it raised more questions than answers in my post ;)

But for what it's worth if I saw someone doing most of these within a very short distance, and I had camera footage then yes, I might well hand it over voluntarily. And a couple of them on their own if they caused me or another road user to take extreme avoiding action (ie not just having to brake a bit or stop a little sharpish - we're talking vehicle or property damage).

Why ? Why would they go after the tiny mistake in the footage as opposed to the great big howler it was submitted for? It's no easier - and more likely to be a waste of time when/if it gets to court.
Because they have your name, they have your address, they know you were driving the car. You say it's harder, but if they issue a cheeky FPN, you'll probably just pay it.

All I'm saying is, think twice when submitting footage. They've not developed a whole new level of altruism.

The police protect and serve the state, not you.

I think we are saying the same thing really, if they do all of them, and I fear that tomorrow I might get involved in The Huge Accident they cause I might well report it, but I see at least two of those every single morning/evening on the commute, and if ever I have a morning off and drive at around 11AM it is about 10 times worse.

(In The Olden Days if I had a day off it was a pleasure to drive in the day on the virtually empty roads, now it is quicker & safer to drive in the Determined Early Rush Hour!)

Obviously it's worth clarifying, if my dashcam caught an accident, or a child being hit, or a cyclist being knocked off, then the footage would be made available for sure. I might even stop in that situation, if it was safe to do so. If people/medics/plod were there I might not however.

However, the police want me to send in footage of spotty 18 year olds making mistakes in their naff hatchbacks, or doing 40 in a 30 zone? Nah, y'alright. Too much mither. Pretty sure that's what the plod said to me in the past....

Nope. If you've submitted the footage, you've probably agreed that you were driving the car.

I'd like to see you try to make that case in court...

Why would I need to make that case? I don't work for the plod and I won't be sending anything to them. Not a chance.

Aren't you required to attend Court as a witness if they are basing a prosecution on your footage, and the other party is pleading not guilty?

Or does whoever watches the recorded footage count as a witness?
