Thoughts on this?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-38306678

I personally think, that as long as people are sensible and use common sense (I know, difficult for a lot of people). then it will be a massive success.

    Lets all join the Stazi.

We are even getting this sort of thing at work- there is now a "Whistle-blowers Charter"

What I suspect will happen with the videos is they will simply get 50 million a week, will not be able to process them all, and if they did the courts would collapse under the strain.

If I bothered to clip out all the dangerous driving that my dash cam sees, and post it somewhere, not only would I never have any free time but I'd likely get a "cease & desist" letter from my ISP because of the volume of upload traffic. Multiply that by the number of dashcams in use......
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • The best way to cut down on inconsiderate or dangerous driving is to have police on the roads, a novel idea that may catch on.
If you see a marked vehicle around people behave in the appropriate manner.

If it is anything like other similar schemes, the Met's Roadsafe London reporting system for instance, then they will also look at the standard and manner of driving/riding of the 'cammer'. So be warned, if you are going to submit footage (they usually require at least a couple of minutes before and the same after the 'incident) first be sure it won't show anything that will get you in as much hot water as the one(s) you're reporting.

    Police on the roads? Behave.

It's a dreadful idea. It will probably result in limited, to no convictions but rather potentially incriminate those who are trying to help. You have to be very careful submitting dash cam footage. One tiny little mistake and the police will be after you instead of those who are probably more in the wrong. Much easier that way.

The best thing you can do is try to avoid dangerous drivers. If they're tailgating you, let them go past. If they're cutting in and out of traffic, back off and let the baby have their bottle.

Clip shows on youtube rather disprove the idea that this is as unrealistic as you make out.

The down side is the footage is often not good enough to identify the plate and the driver to make a prosecution successful e.g. that 4x4 driver who deliberately hit a cyclist and got away with a fine and points because they refused to name the driver even though it was caught on the bike rear camera.

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • The state is not your friend, how ironic that this article is from the state broadcaster.
Stazi style the proletariat divided and grassing each other for a pat on the had.
What next, follow that fine example from the khmer rouge and brainwash kids into shopping their parents for having the wrong lifestyle beliefs job thoughts, hopefully they'll only destroy their jobs and livelihoods as punishments for having wrong (not approved by an apparatchik) thoughts and not go all the way.

The courts wouldn't collapse because most would be dealt with using fines and points, no court involved.

Police on the roads would be nice, but paying someone to watch videos and do a little paperwork is much cheaper than paying for the car, maintenance, damage and wage of an officer on the beat.

Watch the below (from 3:25 on) - WARNING DISTRESSING SCENE

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-4TYhkx1CU

Now tell me that it's wrong for a dashcam to record and be used to prosecute - the lying woman would have got away with claiming to not know who was driving had the camera footage not existed.

Multiply that daily for all the other accidents caught on camera even if you're ignoring all the cars jumping red lights, undertaking, speeding, racing etc.

Oh and I can't believe I missed it **slippery slope fallacy alert**

While a bit over the top, I entirely agree that the state and specifically the police are NOT your friend. They're not doing this to help you, and they're not doing this because they're on an altruistic streak. Far from it. If you decide to send in some dash cam footage, you better watch it back 4 or 5 times before you do. ANY little mistake and they'll have your pants down.

At the end of the day, if the police want to catch bad motorists, put more coppers on the roads and start to take vehicle crime seriously.

A few thoughts on this (though they raise more questions than answers).
    Lets all join the Stazi.
At what point of criminality do you draw the line of it being socially acceptable reporting it / supplying evidence to the authorities if you have it ?
When you witness an attempted murder ? Dog fouling ? Forced entry ? Drunken driving ? Littering ? Dangerous driving ?
Somewhere in there there's the line between being a responsible citizen and a Stazi style snoop. Personally I think dangerous driving (and yes, there's another level of question as to what you / I might consider that to be) is on the responsible side of the line.
One tiny little mistake and the police will be after you instead of those who are probably more in the wrong. Much easier that way.
Why ? Why would they go after the tiny mistake in the footage as opposed to the great big howler it was submitted for? It's no easier - and more likely to be a waste of time when/if it gets to court.

Interesting stance considering some of your comments in the last day or two on other threads, but there you go - hence leaving the name on the quote. Not my main point on this one, anyhow. My main thought is that people tend to behave better round police vehicles. Therefore, unless you police the roads to saturation level and make people behave all the time, or up the number of unmarked vehicles significantly, you are unlikely to make a significant dent in occurrences of dangerous driving.
