Here is a question for the OP. Who would you think might have the most successful career a) someone who had been to university and got a degree or b) someone who left school and became a hairdresser?

....and the answer is b? - because their name is Vidal Sassoon.:rotfl:

Look out, OP. Those upper classes you're so desperate to rub shoulders with can spot the difference between old money and new money a mile off.

I get the feeling the OP thinks The Only Way is Essex et al are fly on the wall documentaries.

Look what happened to poor old Jordan when she thought that having a lot of money gave her an in into the world of the polo set. Did not end well for her 'social mobility' dreams.
  • The only way to become upper class is to marry into it. One of my dad's mates is an upper crust, or as close to it as possible. Ex-Army Officer, owns land and old property. Gets hilariously drunk and tells awesome stories.

Me? I can tell the difference between Coop and Waitrose mince pies. Proper middle-class I am.

I went to the Black Country museum last summer, and there was a tailor shop where they'd ask your profession. If you weren't the 'right sort' they wouldn't even let you in!

Because I was talking about mobilising from 'my' social class. My parents and their parents were working class and had terraced houses. If I buy a 3 bed detached then I will be placed in and rubbing shoulders with the middle/upper middle class

Whilst I hate social climbers as someone with a background that might be considered upper middle class (deportment, piano and riding lessons as a child) You are what my grandmother would refer to as "new money" having money and having class are two very different things. Your desire to flash the cash purely to impress will do more to harm your dreams of climbing the social ladder, and anyone who is impressed with that kind of behaviour is probably from the same background so won't help your advancement either. If you genuinely want to do a Carol Middleton, learn how to conduct yourself, manners and social graces are everything (including understanding which wine to drink from which glass and why you should never put vinegar on your chips) but remember the people you aspire to be will always make jokes about "doors to manual" behind your back.

Or you can enjoy the money you have, enjoy the security it gives you and not give to hoots what others think......

One will give you happiness one will leave you never truly satisfied with the life you lead.

I couldn't find any modern looking two bedroom terrace/semi houses
A modern house? And you're trying to move up in the world? Oh dear, you'll be telling us next you buy your own furniture :rotfl:.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I genuinely love your answer but I'm trying to join the middle class not the upper class. I was born working class but with some head starts (I went to a very posh school and already understand the aspirations and social patterns that allow the middle class to stay ahead, I had a single parent upbringing but they had a good job, I was sheltered from the worst parts of my area) so I believe I will be able to attain this

WHAT??? Never put vinegar on your chips? Really?! What on earth do posh people put on their chips if they're missing out on the trinity of salt, vinegar & ketchup?!

Oh hold on. Did you mean "You should never put vinegar on your chips" as in "You should never put vinegar on your chips .... you should get your butler to put it on for you" ..? Yeah, that makes more sense. :D

(I'm not going to reply to the original poster. I know some people have hidden depths, but some people are so shallow that when you scratch the surface, all you get is more surface....)
