FWIW I think roads like that are beautiful with miles of immense views and wilderness. But not everyone feels that way of course."Such an enormous country, you realize when you cross it" - Jack Kerouac0 -

When that is at the end of a drive you haven't enjoyed anyway, it can make you lose the will to live. Nothing of interest at all. I'd rather have gone up wrynose pass and red bank a dozen times. At least they keep you alert.
I found the drive to the south rim exactly the same, and was so surprised that you basically see nothing like what you're expecting until you are there.
I don't mind driving, particularly in the US, but long, boring drives exhaust me - I just want to go to sleep when I get there, and heaven forbid there is a return journey involved.
We are going to go to Lake Havasu to visit a friend next month - I think it should be OK, and there are places along the way to stop on the way back if I need a break...nowhere near as long of a drive, though.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
Well I've experienced it all now. Went into Cromwell last week, sat at the bar and put $20 each in the VP machines. We're playing max credits and the barman comes over. "2 Black Russians please". "Sorry Sir" he says. "When the Blue light behind the machine lights up I can comp you a drink". "What? You mean I have to play through the best part of $200 to get a drink?" Bye!
I wondered why there was no one sitting at the bar. Good luck with your tips mate.
I know about the light system but that's after you've had your first drink.
I did collar a floor manager but he said that was the rule. You actually have to play through the best part of $200 to get a stinking free drink at the bar at Cromwell. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0 -
I didn't even drive myself to the grand canyon and found it and the canyon boring. I could not imagine doing the actual drive!!!:A Your Always in my heart, you never ever will be forgotten-9/9/14:heart2:0

been wondering the same thing.
I done some quotes the other day and most were around £250 but Alamo was £600, they have come down a bit since then though
We used Alamo last week because they were the cheapest using moneysupermarket comparison. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. Most striking was the change in road surface and other general conditions when we crossed from Nevada to California, couldn't believe the change. Smooth blacktop to a badly maintained concrete road right at the border. We drove Needles highway towards our destination, and the other side of the loop on the way back. Didn't go through California on the way back.
Love George Benson......seen him twice now but in Manchester!!0 -

Lake Havasu is nice, a bit different. We did a trip where we flew to Phoenix, did a few nights in Scottsdale, then drove to Flagstaff (overnight for canyon). Also stopped at Laughlin on the way to Vegas for a night. The road to the canyon was a bit boring, I agree. We did however see some great scenery on other roads, I particularly remember the winding climb up from Phoenix, stopping at a place where there were Indians selling things, Montezumo Castle, Sedona etc. There are some nice drives out there, but I agree that bit at the canyon is a bit out of place. And it's quite a long road.0 -
Fair enough, if you don't like long drives then a US road trip isn't a wise choice.
However, a trip from San Francisco to Yosemite Valley would be worthy of consideration. That's about 200 miles each way and the difference in the terrain as you get into the mountains makes it very interesting. Yosemite is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
From Las Vegas, a trip to Zion National Park in southwestern Utah is another great option. That's about 160 miles each way but not all that interesting until you get to Arizona and Utah. Zion is another wonderful park.
Personally I'd rate Yosemite and Zion as far superior to the Grand Canyon. Just my opinion, of course."Such an enormous country, you realize when you cross it" - Jack Kerouac0 -
I also preferred Zion to the GC south rim...something about looking up vs looking down made it more spectacular to me.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0
