  • WOW!!

I've just spent two hours reading this whole thread and I'm feeling really inspired! You lot are amazing. How wonderful to see so much honesty and encouragement in one place.

I lost over 5 stone following the break up of my marriage in 2000, and kept it off for a long time, but to be honest I probably needed to lose another 5!!

My home life has settled down although my work life is still exceptionally stressful and between being content with my new partner and stressed at work, I have slowly slowly gained nearly 3 stone over the last 18 months. Im diabetic and suspect that the pill they have me on at the moment has contributed to the weight gain, although it as also got my blood sugar well under control. So changing medication may not be an option.

However, we have decided to get married next year, so I have an excellent reason to get it back off and this thread may be just what I need!

My OH is also overweight and we are going to do it together which should help. However my little 13 year old ray of sunshine is a picky eater and a Type 1 diabetic. I have been allowing that to complicate our eating habits. But thats going to stop!

I know that our main problem is portion control! I love to cook, its how I de-stress, but I need to remember that there are only TWO of us, not a whole army!

So...sign me up for the campaign Frogga, gimme a number and I will get started!

I look forward to getting to know you all a lot better!

(P.S. We are dealing with our debt too!)

  • Remembering when i was a kid and money was tight in our house, mum used to bulk out meals like cottage pie with loads of veg from the garden ie broccoli, carrots etc. so that only half the amount of meat was needed. Berakfask in the winter months was porridge, but made the scotts way , oats are soaked in water with a wee bit salt, then when hot you added cold milk and a wee bit sugar or golden syrup!! You can make quick healthy porridge this way in the microwave, it takes only 2 mins, only these days i have it for my lunch as it keeps me going the rest of the day without the urge for snacks..... so for a few pence a cholesterol lowering diet lunch which is satisfying. Plus i have a very physical job , so i have to be well fuelled.
Good luck everybody in your quest.

Hi, I love porridge with cold milk and lots of salt or golden syrup.
Now I am diabetic with high blood pressure so can have neither, hate lo salt. Tried cinnamon sprinkled on, not bad, anyone got any other ideas please.
  • Good morning folks

I hope the poorly people feel better soon - glad to hear you are thinking positively though ! Leopardlady - its really not such a bad thing to nibble whilst you're working, you just need to make sure you nibble on healthy things !

I'll go into what foods I dislike another time, don't want to bore you all silly right now but I make myself laugh with some of the things I don't like and why.

MrsM - ooo spooky coincidence with the book, LOL !!! it is a good'un, isn't it. Don't worry about the honey and chilli in the soup - the original recipe said 2tsp, I just upped it cos I love honey :D and the pinch of chilli flakes was optional too..I upped it to two myself. It doesnt tear the roof of your mouth off - I really don't like " hot " food, just spicy, and it just gives it a bit of pep. I froze the rest of it down too.

I don't think anyone should give up dumplings or anything else... moderation really is the key. i.e. I had a cuppa, and a banana, and a croissant for my breakfast this morning. Which is fine, and I know it is. What wouldn't have been fine was for me to go " No , no croissants ever again, or only on every 2nd Tuesday when the month has a z in it ", then going through some horrible prolonged conflict about me desperately craving a croissant then denying myself, then at some vulnerable point going " oh !!!!!! it " and devouring a six pack of them. Or me thinking it was ok to wolf down a croissant for breakfast, bought sandwich crisps choc and pepsi for lunch, more crisps, wedges of toast etc mid afternoon, and either more of the same or toast and cheese and a bit of fruit and salad for dinner, followed by " hunger " pangs at bedtime and another plateful of food. Which I was pretty much doing every single day before starting this :)

Day has unexpectedly brightened up so, after a bit of early morningish excercise inhouse ;) am going to head out for a walk. Later afternoon/early evening is going to be cheese and onion pasty making time ! :D have a good day all

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of things that might get me eating breakfast? I've never been very good at eating when I first get up, (can't face it a lot of the time :( ) so end up grazing all morning - I think I'd be better with something savoury, but I'm veggie, so that can be difficult...

Scrambled tofu on toast??? Beans on toast for breakfast?

How about porridge - you can have it with salt apparently?

I make myself eat porridge - don't really like it and never used to eat breakfast other than a slice of toast. But it keeps the snackies away till lunch ;)

I like it with cinnamon or mixed spice and raisins - are they too high in sugar?

Aldi do frozen forest fruits and they are lovely stirred into porridge. I have a sweet tooth and don't add sugar or honey to either of these options - but not sure if it's too much fruit sugar?

Someone else suggested making it with apple juice but I found this a bit too sweet and would probably go half that and half water.

Serving of fruit and fibre, with 1 tab food doctor perfect start organic museli mix. 1 tab mixed seeds - pumpkin, sunflower and sesame and 1 heaped tab of sultanas. Semi skimmed milk. I small glass juice.

I think that this gives me 2 of my 5 a day (Sultanas and Juice) and a good helping of fibre and omega oils.

I also need to lose a lot of weight but I want to be healthy doing it. So is this a good breakfast or have I got it wrong again?

    Hi there

debtfree and leopard lady.....I think you are both right..our bodies let us know what they need... just sometimes we don't listen - im sure my body has never demanded a whole tube of pringles and copious amounts of choc;) .... i love all fruit except...bananas..really not a fan, yet when i feed off colour..i crave them oh and tinned salmon (which i never eat any other time)-not together :p .. so i think you are both doing the right thing..eat what your feel you need... hope you both feel back on form soon:T

This is it.... well done on staying the same... and brekkie in bed awwww how sweet bless her....

eumenidies.... do you eat eggs ? what about frittata... you can make it and eat it hot or cold so you could always carry a piece in a box and eat it a little later in the morning...
    its basically a glorified omelette...
just gently cook what ever veg you like in a frying pan.. onion, peas, mushroom, peppers ... great for using up leftovers...add a bit of cooked diced potato or some cooked pasta.. whisk some eggs n milk.... enough to come about half way up the veggies when it is about set, you can add a bit of cheese if you have any shove under the grill and then cool slightly and cut into wedges..
You would have your vitamins, some carbs, protein, calcium and it isn't heavy and you can alter it as you like, and it will last you several days...

and if you don't eat eggs ignore the above :D .. sure we wil come up with some more ;)

    PennyT -welcome on board..
Another wedding :T , great your hubby is doing it with you..soo much easier...
Portion control was my biggest problem... i now cook the same amount and as soon as its cold..its portioned and into the freezer... just think you will get days where you can put your feet up and use portions out of the freezer...and think of all that money you save :j i bulk out with veggies and "trick" myself.... if i make a pie..i don't do potatoes... i have carbs in the pastry and i really don't miss it, and nor does hubby and he is a squaddy who works outside all day.. The other day i did a dinner with yorkies..didn't do potatoes again and never missed them...
hopefully you will pick up loads on here...we all have

  • I struggle with breakfast too - cant eat it when I first get up, and have trouble finding sugar free stuff that I like.

Do you have any idea how much sugar there is in ordinary cornflakes?

At the moment I am trying to have fruit which I snack on during the morning.

    Morning all
Have to say I probably wont be a regular visitor but...
regarding all the chocolate cravings...what I do is have porridge in the morning made with water & sweetener in the microwave then add 3 or 4 squares of Lidl's Madagascar chocolate spinkled with a mixture of dried fruit, seeds and nuts.
Keeps me going till lunch and stops the choco craving:T
