Thanks MrsMc - will look out for those - hopefully they cost less than the yummy Dorset Cereals though!!working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0

Newlywed - yes, you can soak or even cook porridge in just water, adding a splash of milk when you eat it if you like. I have a Highlander friend who always cooks it the old fashioned way with water and salt ! I quite like it like that but do prefer it with milk. Also, I occasionally buy corned beef - I must admit I've not looked at the fat content lately, LOL - but the ratio of corned beef to tatties, onion and delicious healthy beetroot is relatively small so I don't think it would be too outrageous
Also, maybe borscht, rockie ? you should be able to freeze that down too if you don't add sour cream/yoghurt etc to it beforehand.
Welcome Nodwah - I echo MrsM's advice re stocking up on soups etc - I wish I could get more into mealplanning but unfortunately whenever I DO get organised, the unexpected and unwelcome usually turns up to stymie me... like todaydespite feeling pretty good yesterday, it appears I have come down with a stomach bug.... grrr. So, am off sick today and dodging between bed and bathroom
really blinking annoying, tis the Law of Sod, seems every time I get a decent shop in with nice food this seems to happen.
So, today I will mostly be eating... water. Well and probably some porridge and maybe a banana later.
Oh and re Dorset cereals etc... my take on it is this : I think we all have things where paying a bit extra means less wastage ... the actual food items vary from person to person according to taste. If it is consistently good quality and you really enjoy it, then it is good value for money - as opposed to paying a lot less for things you end up really not liking and/or throwing away/not using etc." Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams.. I ordered a "cold plate" once ewww i couldn't touch it.... it was 7 piles of stuff very similar to our ready made potato salad, hummous, tzatziki etc....obviously something that should go on the table and dipped into and about a million cals
Yeah, the salad was just...well finely shredded and dripping, so stayed well away. My boyfriends dad is Cypriot and we've been a couple of restaurants, but I'm just not that keen on a lot, especially the dips, but lamb chops are fine.
Today I started off with a cup of warm water with a slice of lemon in rather than my normal cup of tea, felt really refreshed by it, I'm just now having my first tea of the day and am having a few dried apricots and raisins for a snack. Not really sure about dinner, as I may be at my boyfriends, in which case it'll probably be pasta, or I might be at my house, which means cheeky veggie soup...

Thanks newlywed - I'm veggie but after a quick Google most recipes seem to be hash type so I think I might experiment a bit:eek: with beetroot, potato, carrot and oinion and serve the result with Cauldron sausages
I'll let you know if it turns out edible! :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Hi
I hope you don't mind if I join you tried sw and ww but put weight back on so I am hoping I can do better the OS way. One thing I have to ask though I was telling my mother that I was going to do this and as we were discussing OS she pointed out that I shouldn't use sweeteners or drinks sweetened with them she said that she is convinced that half the additives they put in foods these days sweeteners included contribute to the fact that there are so many overweight people do you agree with this. I only use a little splenda in coffee and on my porridge but I have bought squash with aspartame in it so do you think I am better off drinking squash with sugar in it as I do dilute it quite a lot what do you think0 -
moneyowen- I'm not sure whether it contributes to being overweight, but I stay away from sweeteners for health reasons. I try never to buy anything with sweetners in as I had a bad experience with aspartame (it was in a vitamin C supplement I was taking for my hayfever and after taking it for a week I had crippling stomach pains and couldn't walk without pain-lots of people have had similar experiences). So, yes I use sugar, stay away from anything that says "no added sugar" as they tend to have sweeteners. Sainsburys do a nice high juice with no sweeteners, as does morrisons if you are looking for something different to try.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £3650

hi there Moneyowen and welcome on board
ooooh i like your mum:D .... i have tried every diet going..several times:p , and now i have gone back to eating all the old meals cooked from scratch, toad in the hole, steak n mushrom pies, savoury meat pie, cheese, potato n onion pie - just like they used to do at school:j, liver n onions, fish n parsley sauce etc and have lost 1st 3.5lb in 6 weeks... no starving -just eating smaller portions and plenty of veg... and eating when im hungry - not when the clock tells me its time for lunch etc....I make pastry with half lard and half butter, buy the cheap cuts of meat... so you would have thought that my weight would be going up.... but its stedily coming down.... still have a long way to go though:rotfl:
I still have sugar free jellies and sugar free dilute - but only because i cant stand the full sugar ones....but have tried to cut out all other artificial sugars etc... and the thing i have found is that i have NO cravings at all.. nothing bothers me... and i do believe that all the Low Fat stuff i have tried to live on for years has confused my system..and cost me a fortune....
My next thing is to get rid of sugar free dilute, i like sparkling water..but then there is all that hoo har about it not being as good for you as still...its endless isn't it:rotfl: .. still i like fizzy, so that is what i will have...
Then im going to experiment with making my own jelly.... it won't be as low cal... but thought i could shove loads of fruit through the juicer.. add gelatine and see how we go... in fact that is now next weeks mission :T
Heck you have got me pondering now:rotfl:-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -

I totally agree that artificial sweetners make you gain weight! I saw a programme on some obscure discovery channel type programme a couple of years ago and it said that when you eat artificial sweetner your brain registers that you are getting something sweet and so tells your body to start the insulin release mechanism to cope with it, and this is not good for you. When your body then tells your brain that there is not sugar it can set up real cravings and desire for more sweet stuff to satisfy you. Apparantly they have done lab experiments with rodents and the ones given the sweetner became much larger than the ones given sugar. It might all by twaddle but I know that when I drink loads of diet drinks I am always looking for something to eat and when I just have water I am much calmer and much better able to stick to my diet. Just my opinion but....
Anyway - everyone is still sounding really positive and I have to say that all of your posts are really helping me to stick to my eating plan, such as it is. It is so nice to read all your meal plans and recipes and has given me loads of ideas. Today I have had 3 ryvitas with 1 low fat cheese slice for breakfast, some leftover cabbage with hm bolognaise sauce for lunch and I am hoping to have leftover turkey breast and leftover carrot and swede, cabbage and hm mushy peas for tea.
I went to the hairdressers this morning and the girl who does my hair had some Sainsburys Be Good To Yourself Apple chips. 50 calories and trace of fat for 1 decent sized bag and they were delicious - really crispy and not at all like that spongy dried apple you can get. Apparantly they are about £1.79 for a multipack and she said she thought they were on bogof at the moment. I thought I might get some and have them for an evening TV snack with some extra light philadelphia mixed with cinnamon.
I got through yesterday without overeating and do find that I feel much less stiff and heavy already.
Thanks again for all the inspiration everyone!Jane

Really hungry again today, must not be drinking enough water. Today I had cereal and soup and have had 3 plums this afternoon but still feel hungry so I am off to get some iced water.
Tonight is chickpea madras and brown rice with cucumber raita, my favourite!0
