    I'm Back again,

Been thinking long and hard about the impending decision of wether or not to get rid of my car. Just can't deciede what to do and now it's getting me down. For obvious reasons it will help with the loosing weight as I think a car makes me very lazy.

We have two cars in the family which I am unhappy about for two reasons : the "green" reason and the "cost" reason.

Mr Frog needs one to get to work and cannot do with out it. He works 10 miles away and sometimes has to be there at 3am , there is no public transport so he must have a car.

I use the other one to get to work but I have biked before for several weeks and as it's only 5 miles away it isn't too much of a hassle. We can cope with just one car if necessary if I just do some forward planning. I can do the shopping at the weekend et.c .

Just before Christmas I ran all the petrol out of the car and decieded that I would no longer use it. It will defo fail it's MOT in April anyway so I'd either have to spend hundreds doing it up again for another year or buy another one. Mr Frog bought me bags for my bike and waterproofs and it will really help with the weight loss I know.

It's just that it already is an issue not having a car.

On wednesday both Tadpoles have the dentist which is 8 miles away and Mr Frog will be back at work so will have the car. On Friday we were going to the pictures to see a film for Tadploe 1's Birthday treat and again I'll have no car. I also keep thinking about the summer holidays, We live in a village quite cut off ( only 2 buses a day) and every nice day in the summer we go down to the beach, which is about 6 miles away. We wont be able to just get up and go if I have no car.

I guess what I have to deciede is wether having two cars really is a necessary expense if we live where we do. Mr Frog is very anti me getting rid of my car as he thinks I'll be really stuck with out it. However, he's rubbish about money and so I don't think he's looking at it through the same eyes. He just says that we both work hard and money isn't THAT tight so why make unnecessary sacrifices? I just don't know what to do

It's so unfair that it goes on quicker than it comes off!

If you are a size 12-ish I would say you probably haven't got too much to worry about. Just eat sensibly for a few weeks and you'll fit them again. Once all the Christmas stuff is gone it's a lot easier. I find pastry the biggest culprit so make sure you stay away from any leftover mince pies - satsumas may not be quite as nice but you know they are the right way to go!

Good luck, and keep reading this thread for some really good advice and inspiration.
Oh dear, here we go again.

    Hi frogga

To me there is no decision to be made - keep the car. I think living an OS life should not mean you deprive yourself or make life more difficult and stressful, but that life is less stressful, and it sounds like you live in a place where being without transport would be VERY stressful.

You don't have to use it unnecessarily, you can cycle to work whenever you want and leave the car at home, but having it there to fall back on is such a comfort.

I think you are in a similar situation to us - we are fairly remote, have kids, both work different places and times etc - and I had to get rid of my car a few years ago as we just couldn't afford to run two. It was a nightmare and I will never do it again. The stress of trying to get the kids to all the places they had to be with no transport nearly drove me to a breakdown.

    DON'T DO IT!!!!
Oh dear, here we go again.

Not that damm bloke Will Power again! sick of hearing about him ;)

Well, jennyjelly now I am back to square one again! ~ after posting I spoke to Tadpole 2 and he thought it was a good idea to get rid of the car!! He pointed out that Mr Frog usually goes to work on the Motorbike during the summer so we could have the car then in th holidays. I also think if there is a car in the drive I will be very tempted to take it to work!

The cost of having my car shocked me when I added it up ; £200 ish on Car Tax, £150 insurance, £700ish on Petrol ,£425 to park at work, not to mention cost of MOT and any new parts/tyres et.c That is a hell of a lot of money for a luxury. As I said it is a SECOND car so we are already paying that for Mr Frogs car!!

No, mind made up ~ it's going , I think

Hi Frogga - I think I would give serious consideration to keeping the car. I know that it will be more expense, but you have (IMO) to balance that with the expense on your stress levels. I know that being so cut off would stress me off big time and stress always leads me down the binge route and you may want to consider this. It is always nice to have a choice. I'm okay choosing to do stuff like walk or cycle but if I HAD to then I might start to get resentful and so on.

How much would you have to spend to get it right? DO you know any mechanics or the like who can give it the once over before you put it in for its MOT? In my experience alot of garages will tell you that you need stuff doing when you don't, just so you will spend more money.

Moving on... Hope you are all okay - nice to see so many newbies on here. I have had much worse Christmases with regard to eating, but I have had a rumbling upset stomach since Christmas night which has limited what I can eat so it's not really a triumph of willpower:o I have just made a shepherds pie with extra lean mince for tea tonight, and I am giving alot of thought of trying to eat alot more vegetarian foods in the New Year. I have had several phases of being a vegetarian and love the food, but each time I have become increasingly reliant on cheese and nuts and that hasn't helped my weight. I have bought in lots of pulses and some vegemince, plus lots of vegetables so I will give it a go from tomorrow. I also HATE Quorn with a passion so that won't be an option - the thought of the stuff makes my teeth on edge - yuck!

Mrs M - you are really an inspiration the way you have coped food wise - at this rate you will be super slim by summer!

hope you are all having a good day. I don't really like New Year's as it gets me all depressed but this year I am going to try and think positively about the coming year and look forward to being several stones lighter by this time next year.

A quick edit - just saw your latest post Frogga - you would save the £425 on work parking if you cycled to work but still kept your car.......
