Cloud services do not hold Hi Res pictures well and they compress them to save space.

I found this to the case with jpgs on Picassa although I haven't noticed any quality issues raw files or jpgs on Onedrive.

Pictures on your hard disk is not going to slow down your PC, but sticking to your need for storage you would be nut to rely on one medium if these photos are of value to you.

I have a plethora of drives, NAS and cloud services.

I managef to get a new 4tb ext drive off eBay for \£75 usually £125

flash drives are not very reliable and although data can be recovered it is not as easy as off a disk.

For Cloud I break my data up, for photos off my phone I used to use onedrive but when thry reduced the storage from 15gb to 5gb that was the last straw for me ever trusting any Microsoft product or service.

Now I create multiple account (make sure you delete your cookies or use different browser such as opera with free VPN) on Mega.nz They provide 50gb for free,

For me it is just a backup medium, I assume it can go bust at any time but I have local copies on HD and NAS so fine if they do.

Uploading on ADSL is going to be slow as you will be lucky to get 1mb, luckily some local free services have 24mb so I use them if I need to upload a lot.

As far as amount of storage on external disk the more the better as your needs will grow.

Once you have sorted out your storage you can get down to your speed problem.

Picasa has been replaced by Google Photos with Google Drive and My Drive. It is much better, although old Picasa software is still available for download.

The two Hdd's were a choice, I should have made that clear, sorry. Either use the handier Portable drive, or if you only want to use it at home, use the SATA drive, which can be permanently attached to your PC.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Always get the biggest you can afford.

Unless there's some sort of deal on the lower sized options.

However, if you have 10 years worth of photos that are just shy of 1TB, I would put all those on a 1TB drive and store it elsewhere, then start again.

I've approx 1000 photos which I've never backed up or copied so will buy an external hard drive. Should I get a 1tb or 2tb and is there any other thing I should look for when buying one?

If I copy all photos to hard drive and then delete from my laptop will it run faster as its very slow?

A mate said just buy a usb flash drive, which one be best it or a external hard drive?

    Cheers

    Joe

  • Theres tonnes of places that offer secure online storage. One that I personally use is dream-hosts.com

They are cheaper than most places I have found too.

The inherent contradiction in the question was picked up in the first three responses

my pictures are 25GB and my videos are 23GB, a 500GB hard drive would probably still be too much to buy

Yeh, I'm going to upload them chronologically about 10gb at a time. I'm limited to an up speed of 4mb/s. I'm also using the Amazon windows upload tool rather than going via the website.

Bit of an update - I'm now up to 128gb (48,378 files) loaded onto Amazon Drive. I've filled my 10gb allowance of 'non photo' files with home movies..

The wife now loves that she can use an app on her phone to see all of our photos. Maybe once I'm done I'll back it up to Google photo too :)

My broadband provider must hate me but i'm glad I have an unlimited package
