what size of hard disk should I purchase?

check the size of your internal hard disk, and how much is used, 500GB or 1TB portable is a sweet spot for value, plus some flash/sd/dvd's
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand
  • To be honest, you've not even taken enough to fill up a 32gb SD card.. At that rate a portable hard disk seems overkill. I wouldn't keep them on an SD card as they're a bit prone to damage (or mine are!). A good brand, solid USB stick should be enough.

I think you've actually created some mp4, or video files - as 25gb is quite a lot of space for just 1000 photos. In the folder, you might want to 'sort by size' then take a look at the biggest files.

Is that how much is used, or their total size?

These photos are on my laptop this 2-3 years

If you're going to carry on at the same rate, then a 250Gb drive would last you until 2030 or so..... as long as you're just backing up photos to it

Whats wrong with micro sd cards? I only use them for storage. Its great for films and pictures due to chopping and changing the computer. Sometimes im needing music on my phone pop an sd card in. Sometimes i want movies on tablet, pop an sd card in. Photos can be taken from camera/quadcopter and within seconds viewed on my tablet/phone.

You could get 2 x 32 gb micro sd cards for less than £30. Mymemmory had 128gb micro sd cards the other week for ~£25 each. Ok so not always the quickest for transfer but you only do that once.

OK, so if you got a 500Gb you could back up all your photos as well as any other data you have - Word docs, spreadsheets, music, text files, etc., still with plenty of room for expansion.

But remember to check the price of 1TB externa hard disks - typically you only spend an extra £10 for twice the backup space

I'm generally with goggler on this, Ringo on rate of increase and gloom and doom on multiple backups.

However as had been mentioned storage is quite cheap for an external 500GB hard drive -generally quite reliable.
Not a big fan of flash drives, micro SD cards too easy to mislay!
Cloud storage great for sharing, a separate medium and location but you should be aware of the issues mentioned above and be comfortable with those.
DVDs sound great and cheap. Not huge though (lots of pix, maybe one or a few videos only!), easy to carry/use but they do not have an infinite life either and not quite as convenient for backing up.
My personal choice, hard external so drive for local moveable backup, cloud for additional backup for non sensitive data, pix; videos I put on DVD.
A big external drive e and back up everything in case you computer crashes, and regular frequent further backups depending on how much risk is acceptable to you.

NOTE That there are sometimes pictures of the first frame of a video stored alongside it. That might explain your pix with vids!
