However as had been mentioned storage is quite cheap for an external 500GB hard drive -generally quite reliable.
Not a big fan of flash drives, micro SD cards too easy to mislay!
Cloud storage great for sharing, a separate medium and location but you should be aware of the issues mentioned above and be comfortable with those.
DVDs sound great and cheap. Not huge though (lots of pix, maybe one or a few videos only!), easy to carry/use but they do not have an infinite life either and not quite as convenient for backing up.
My personal choice, hard external so drive for local moveable backup, cloud for additional backup for non sensitive data, pix; videos I put on DVD.
A big external drive e and back up everything in case you computer crashes, and regular frequent further backups depending on how much risk is acceptable to you.
NOTE That there are sometimes pictures of the first frame of a video stored alongside it. That might explain your pix with vids!0 -
With the difference in price nowadays, a 500Gb is not much more & gives you a bit of future proofing without going over the top.
I'd certainly also look at a cloud service (gmail have a decent size for free) and/or a usb stick. I got a 64gb usb stick for less than £15 from mymemory.c.uk0 -

Why is it too much? I have more than that on Onedrive.0 -

I have several TB in my Crashplan backups.0 -
24GB of pictures? are you sure? Thats probably more than 5000 at 16MP resolution and approx 15,000 at 6MP.
Thats a bit more than the 1000 or so you mentioned initially.

Whats wrong with micro sd cards?
Flash memory doesn't have the same kind of error-correction that hard drives offer. Writeable CD/DVDs are probably safer, but mechanical hard drives are even better.
It's much easier to recover data from a failing hard drive, and they are more likely to degrade gradually, rather than being fine one minute and failing the next.0 -

I've tried uploading to the cloud, but it's going to take forever to load that much, and the software tends to bomb out. Yeh, I should probably go through it all and select the stuff I want, but I can't be bothered!0 -

as long as you have unlimited internet it doesn't matter if it takes a day or two as its just working in the background and shouldn't affect anything else.
just make sure you have a simple file structure. i just have one folder called 'memories' and then inside that subfolders photos, videos and each then have folders labeled in years. if you are using something like google photos to backup you will then be able to search for photos by location, type etc
the first upload will take a while but after that you can just forget about it and let the software do its majic"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -

I know what you mean as my home internet upload speed is <1 Mbps. That's one of the reasons I bought an external drive. I back up files on to the external drive and then take it to work where the upload speed is just a bit quicker at 900 Mbps.0 -

Apart from the fact that you need to run the computer for all that time.0
