Seems quite possible to me that someone got hold of a Tescos account list, phished that over a few days or weeks and then made a coordinated attack on all the accounts they'd got details for in one hit over a weekend, so as to maximize their chances of success.
Because I don't click weird links on emails reportedly from Tesco Bank.Goals

I can guarantee you its not as a result of phishing. I have been affected. I have not received any phishing emails purporting to be from Tesco (ever) never mind being lax enough to reply to them/use any links in them.0 -
I'd think it's rubbish because if a card reader was attached to a cash point it would affect all banks. Tesco cash machines do not just serve Tesco bank customers.AnotherJoe wrote: »Why is that rubbish?

Well, as we are in "Savings And Investments", it appears Tesco stock is only down 1%, so not too much panic so far.0

!!! Phishing !!! You said Phishing as a possibility was "rubbish"
Thats nothing to do with card readers and cash points.0 -
The last I heard was 20,000 customers affected.
If this is not insider complicity, and based on phishing and vishing only, then the gang that did this must have similar lists on Halifax, etc.
They could attack one bank at a time.
Just wait for Head of IT/Security to go on holiday?0 -
Apparently 20,000 customers have had money fraudulently taken from their accounts with a further 20,000 attempts where the tranfer was blocked - 40,000 in all. That's an awful lot of phishing (having first in some unexplained way obtained the email addresses of Tesco current account customers) that no one had noticed or mentioned to Tesco. Did not one person who got that phishing email spot it and report it to Tesco or here? Did you get one? An attempt was made to take £300 from my account and I'm darn sure I didn't get one and nor do I give card details to phishers.AnotherJoe wrote: »!!! Phishing !!! Had it been down to customer error then I'm sure Tesco would have liked that to be known rather taking all the blame themselves.
Nor was the info obtained from an on-line retailer because the details would have related to several different banks and for the same reason skimming wasn't involved. Nor were current accounts hacked as implied in the daft article on this site by "Senior MSE Reporter", Callum Brodie.
So that seems leave some tinker having gained access to a database of Tesco's debit card details, possibly via a third party, as Tesco have claimed, who would know those details .0 -
I also got the same text message. Interestingly it appears that payments can still be made via the Tesco bank app, just sent a test payment to another account and it worked ok. So if you do need to send payments then use the app instead.
There is also an update screen that displays as soon as you launch the app.
from BBC news site
Customers will still be able to use their cards for cash withdrawals, chip and pin payments, and bill payments.
The bank is blocking customers from making online payments using their debit card, although transfers between accounts and to other people are still allowed, a spokesperson said.0 -
Surely ,if a number of accounts have fraudulent payments pending, the bank can trace the requests to source accounts ?0

Missing money (£241.10) now re-credited to my account.0
