The questions is what is mediocre here? To quote the OP, "There's a discrepancy between this and the 10 day window that actually appears when one presses "Track your item" on the well-known web site." which appears to be a complaint about how Amazon provides information rather than anything the seller has done.

Just to remind you, I paid more than half the cost of the item for postage.

Amazon just say something like "The seller has chosen not to send this item tracked." and a diagram comes up with the 10 day window and the cheery words "It's on its way."

This isn't a theoretical. I ordered the blades and they arrived next morning, without me paying for premium postage. They weren't those particular blades, but some like them in a 10 pack and I paid around £5.

That's why I wrote, "I know it doesn't always happen like this...."

But next day does happen, and within two days most of the time. That's my experience. Can't tell it other than it is.

Incidentally, we're now into 3 days for the replacement item and the post has been ....and gone.

I didn't say it was theoretical. Your link showed 2-3 days estimate. But, in your actual experience it was quicker. But you said they can post an order made at 3pm and it arrives by 9am the next morning. That's possible, but it's not guaranteed. Estimates are just that and you seem to only want them to work one way.

Your second transaction isn't a replacement, it's a new order. You've been refunded for the first.

I don't see why sellers should be entitled to a 5/5 rating when they have provided a mediocre service.
To me, service is especially about what happens when things go wrong.

As I pointed-out yesterday, when I ran a business and someone complained, I took it on the chin and went out of my way to see them right, even if I suspected they'd been the cause of the problem. That's the way local businesses run and gain good reputations.

Yes, of course some customers are unreasonable, or even bonkers, but having them bad-mouth you is the last thing you need.

And if you have any business sense at all, you build troubled sales and guarantee honouring into your business plan in the first place.

To be fair the postage is clear before buying and Amazon sort everything on price when looking at offers on a product page so the item vs postage isn't really relevant as the item is most likely worth what the two added together comes to otherwise the seller would be uncompetitive.

Although Amazon add a "Track Package" button to every order the seller doesn't have to use tracking (and typically for lower value items it's recommended not to).

I guess the bit I don't understand is why average customer service deserves more than an average rating.

I don't see why sellers should be entitled to a 5/5 rating when they have provided a mediocre service.

Perhaps my expectations are too high or I just feel differently as a customer compared to a seller.

    Exactly.

I would give a fair rating for the overall service I have received. I have bought the "whole package" from the seller including the delivery. If the delivery is late then my gripe is with the seller, not with whoever he chose to subcontract part of the job.

In many cases I would have no means of knowing if it was actually dispatched promptly by the seller or whether the carrier had messed up.

If the item is good and it turns up within the promised time frame then it deserves 5 out of 5.

If the item is faulty, damaged or turns up late then it deserves less. Exactly how much less depends on the seller's response to the problem.

The second part finally reached me on Saturday a.m.just over 2 weeks from placing the original order. It looked new, although sold as used, and with postage it cost roughly half the price of a new one from other sources.

Of course, I shall never know what the original item I ordered was like.

As it was a fresh order, I gave complimentary feedback. The seller may have done nothing different, but this time the untracked parcel arrived, albeit not in 48hrs, as the printing on the label suggested.

Averaged out, the seller had 4/5 from me; which I consider a fair result. I still don't think they should have asked me to change my original feedback, as that's against Amazon's rules.

That's all I have to say about this. Thanks to everyone who expressed an opinion.

Asking a customer to remove feedback can be acceptable in some circumstances but putting pressure on a customer to remove feedback is against Amazon's rules.

"... putting pressure on a buyer is unacceptable and a violation of our Community Rules."

Clearly, given this thread's title, the op feels he was being pressured to change his feedback.
