Does it smell funny? Bubbling as if it's fermenting? If not, taste a bit. If it tastes fine then use it.0 -
Can't seem to find an answer to this one.... Does cooking something extend its use by date?
For example - bacon used by today, cooked yesterday and now in the fridge. Is it still use by today or does it now have the same few days that any other cooked food would be ok for in the fridge?0 -

Hi kingkano,
Yes it does. I often buy raw chicken reduced on it's use by date. If anything is raw, once it's cooked, I disregard the use by date. I cook it that day then the usual rules apply for cooked meat....cool quickly, keep chilled and if reheating make sure it's piping hot. My rule of thumb for meat is to keep it in the fridge for three days max.

I know this has probably been asked before, but I couldn't seem to find the answer and this thread appears to have some very knowledgable people posting on it! If I buy fresh meat and freeze it, can it then be cooked and frozen again? For example, if I bought a pack of mince, froze it, defrosted it and then made chilli, could I freeze the chilli? I hope that makes sense!0

It does make senseand in those circumstances you could freeze the chilli.
The general rule is that most things can be frozen once if they haven't been previously frozen in the same state.
Eg if meat or fish has been frozen raw, you can't defrost it and freeze it again in it's raw state, but you can change it's state (ie cook it) and refreeze it once. However if it was already cooked when frozen it shouldn't be defrosted and frozen a second time.

Can I ask question please.....
If I roast a chicken for dinner one night and then next day make a chicken pie with some leftovers for next night......would it be safe for my hubby to take a piece of chicken pie the next day to work to warm up as his lunch.
I am worried as Chicken cooked once for Roast Dinner and then again in Chicken pie which should be safe but not sure about slice of chicken pie being heated again.........:eek:
What do you think?0 -
Hi Granny Smith
I know that many people would say that chicken should only be reheated once, but I have done exactly what you're suggesting, many times, with no problems whatsoever. If you do decide to do it just make sure the pie is kept well chilled and reheated until it's piping hot right through. The other alternative is to keep the pie chilled and eat it cold, but I think personally I'd prefer it hot.
Once you've had more replies I'll add your thread to the main food safety thread as your query may help others.

I would say - if it is re-cooked it will be fine.
Not sure about 're-heating' though. For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

according to the rules no - but I have done it and not had a problem - your choice at the end of the day.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.
