I had exactly the same problem this week as needed to do the sniff test and had a really rotten cold. I just grabbed my dh as he was running out to work and got him to sniff. If he hadn't been around, I would've been happy enough to ask the neighbour over the fence, but maybe that's just me. Ahem.

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

I would still cook it.Just make sure it's thoroughly cooked and as long as it has been stored in the fridge it will be fine.

  • You can deff tell when chicken is off, i have a bit of a dodgy fridge and some of my meat if it sits in there too long goes off before the use by date anyway. I opened a chicken a few weks ago that had a day to go on it and there was a funny wiff- thought i would cook it and see, once done i tasted a small bit off the top and there was a not quite right taste about it so it went in the bin at that point.

It is almost certainly fine, the supermarket dates have a good margin for error in them. I would eat it, but would also rely on smell.... haven't you anyone else that can smell it for you?

Yup,besides years ago use by dates didn't really exist & if you got some chicken from your butchers,it wouldn't have a use by date on it,so go by look & smell,if it's OK then cook a small bit & try it,then if it tastes UK,use it as normal.

Chicken can smell a bit 'off' when it is actually ok - just a bit 'ripe' for our sanitised noses. If it looks ok it may feel a bit sweaty so what I would do is wash it under the tap well and then do the sniff test. Lemon juice is also good for making sure there are no bacteria lurking on the skin and give it a nice flavour too (I always cover my chicken for roasting in lemon juice and bung the halves in the cavity).

  • Prob not the right board but I know someone can help.

I bought some frozen cooked mussels from tesco and, while I know you can eat them when defrosted, what are the food rules ablout reheating?

If you're sensible, you won't die :) However, food poisoning from shellfish is grim :(

If I were going to cook them, I'd bring them up to simmering once, and then eat them all. I wouldn't reheat again.

my sliced picked onion have never been opened but have a sort of irridescent sheen on them, it's pretty but is it dangerous?

    thanks!

I make my own pickled onions. They often take on a green/yellow sheen during the pickling process. I wouldn't worry about it. Others' advice can be seen here: www(dot)growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine/making-most/yellow-mould-my-pickled-shallots_15776.html - sorry, can't post links, apparently because I'm a 'new member' (I only joined in 2006!)

Newbie at posting it means - I think you need to have a certain number of posts - I think it's 15 - I suppose to stop the advertising bots from dumping all over the threads.
