Re running in the winter, don't you all worry about slipping on ice? I know that i won't be able to get to the lake that i normally run around when it's icy, so i might have to reconsider my route when the temperature drops.

In the winter when risk of ice its better to run on grass, you can get snow grip things that attach to the bottom of your trainers if you are really worried but i've never used them. Failing that its treadmill time.

There is a sports centre near me if you are a member you can run on the track for free if no one else is hiring it.

Judging by the weather so far I don't think anyone need to worry about snow this year.
  • Thanks I will take a look. Ds likes yoga (he does it at school) he is better than I am, I will only attempt it in my own home as I am utterly useless :rotfl:

Anyone with children try Cosmic kids yoga. Me and ds do this occasionally its for kids but I find it really hard :o most of them are for younger children but there are a couple for older kids ds likes the harry potter one.

haha! yeah I'll only do it at home 1) because I don't like the idea of doing a downward facing dog in public and 2) I don't think I would be able to get through a whole session without laughing!

Angry Bear- yes, that is the right one! I thought it was a C25K thing, but obviously not. I am definitely going to give that a go once i have completed my C25K! Does it have set time/distances?
You can choose whether to go by time or distance and it will space the story line clips out (in between your music playlist).
If you get to the end of the mission and are still running there's a bit of "radio mode" which is good fun too but doesn't follow the rest of the story arc.

At the end of each "season" there are 5k, 10k and even 20k  "missions". But if, like me, you're not quite up to doing 20k in one go, you can stop it and resume it another time to space it out over a few runs.

The first 6 missions are free too, so in best money-saving style you can make sure it suits you before paying for the full thing. I think after that you can still get one free mission a week, but by then I was hooked enough to have paid :D. I look forward to seeing you over on the other thread - we try to avoid giving away any story spoilers ;)

  • I've done 2 sessions of week 2 now, and today went really well! I wasn't feeling up to it at all, but dragged myself out and it was soooo much easier than my first try at it :)

I did do 'week 1' for 6 goes in all - the last one outside, on the road, after 5 goes on the treadmill.

Can't believe that 2 weeks ago I couldn't even manage 60 seconds every interval. Now I'm doing 90 seconds every time.

I know I shouldn't wish summer away, but I'll be happier when it's a little cooler! Best of luck to all of you running tomorrow/at the weekend. It's great to be part of this thread - very inspiring!

Doesn't worry me. Once you get up to speed its fine. If you are running you are naturally out of balance (you are basically catching a fall each step) so your body sorts it out for you whilst you are doing that.
Its a good way to test your stride length and landing points of your feet. To run on ice you can't over stride as that is where you start slipping and you can't land your feet too far out in front as you slip.

It is a bit more awkward to go around corners and to start and stop though. By the time it gets to be icy (if it even does) then you will be up and running full 5ks so not having to stop and walk.

I did a parkrun at the beginning of the year and the first 2 miles was basically sheet ice ... overall i was just over a min per mile slower than normal at that time.

Well done everyone on your progress so far :T:T:T

I didn't get any clothes as I couldn't find any leggings/tracksuit bottoms suitable. I need ones with zipped pockets as I need pockets to put my phone and mp3 player in. I will check out the charity shops at the weekend to see if I can find anything in them.

I have a very small key pocket in my running leggings - any more weight than a key would pull them down and lead to a lot more hitching! I prefer an armband for my phone (which I use for endomondo but could play music too).

I'm so clumsy I fear falling outdoors at the best of times! Just finished day 3 week 5...20min solid run . Well that was the plan! I paused treadmill a couple if times and my Base speed was set at 6.5 and just raised it when my legs were getting sore lol then lowered when I was puffed out. Still a lot of progress to make (it was a 3k run in total, so 2k to make up by week 9). Tempted to take a peek at next week's run! Anyone doing my fitness pal as well?

Edit: just checked next week. That Sarah millican lures you into a false sense of security day 1 and 2 of week 6 then hits out with a 25min run, the cheek! Will try work on bringing my base speed up slightly next week and NO PAUSING! I feel much more achieved when I do it 'properly'.

I have seen those armbands but wondered if you can look at the phone whist running? I like to keep a check on mine to see how I am doing. I use the phone for endomondo too, I love it :) I play my music via mp3 as space is limited on my (very old) phone :(

Thank you, just been looking at these and they all seem to have pockets :T Its hard to tell from the pictures but are the pockets on the inside?

The other thing I was considering was a running belt, not a bum bag (i wouldn't wear one of those) but I have seen belts that are just a strip of material with a zip just enough room for a key and phone. I could wear that under my t shirt.
