As virtually nobody is still on dial-up internet, and modern computers/ phones can load and render 40 threads in pretty much the same time that they can do 10 or 20, it doesn't make a lot of sense to be using fewer than the maximum number of posts per page.

It's one of the first things I look for on the settings menu when joining a forum, as there's no real joy in pressing 'next' more times than you absolutely have to when reading a thread.

Well there you go, I have learnt something new. Just changed my settings from forum default to showing 40 posts per thread.

I started a thread a couple of years ago complaining about all the 'savings diaries', which consisted mainly of individuals posting their favourite colours and what they'd had for lunch. I was shot down a bit, but they do seem to have largely disappeared, or possibly moved to a more relevant board.

To Facebook probably where people live their lives, counting their popularity in the number of likes they can achieve in a day.

And if they manage to post something that goes viral, their lives, reputations and street cred are made wonderful for ever.

Posting that you spilt a cup of coffee over the dog is not normally enough to have it go viral. If it was the dog that did it over you, then maybe.

Then I'd better teach my dog to be more careless when it's making coffee.

Psst: Whatever happened to the point of this thread?

It has drifted since pavane's original question. I think the general feeling must be that it can't be stopped.
  • Pretty much. Fair play to the regulars who do answer some of those posts in depth.

High posts per page is good only if the forum shows new posts since last visit, to my knowledge the MSE forum doesn't have this capability. In this case, I prefer leaving to a small per page setting to avoid the scroll, scroll, scroll.

Getting back to the topic for a second, sticky relies on the user and most don't bother! Simplifying the sticky still wouldn't change this. I am starting to think the best option is to introduce a post moderation for new accounts. This is quiet common in other places, a new account's first 5 or 10 messages need to be approved by a moderator. The 'selfless souls' already constantly replying to the usual questions could do the same this way avoiding unnecessary threads which will only deserve a quick link. The only downside is there is a delay before a newbie's first few posts get approve.

It does! It's the small down arrow logo immediately to the left of each thread title, clicking takes you directly to the new posts since last visit....

It works OK in the Matched Betting section. Anyone who creates a new thread for what should go into "QUESTIONS THREAD. Please ask your questions HERE, don't start a new thread!" usually has their question answered in broad terms, but gently and kindly reminded of the place that exists specifically for newbie questions.

Maybe the moderating is more finely tuned in that sub-forum?

And it's perhaps against the spirit of MSE to be putting newbies through a form of checking? Like asylum seekers.

Of course, you need to be using the old forum version to get the benefit of that feature.
  • Hi everyone, we're happy for people to start new threads on this. They're asking for help and this is the ideal place for them to come.
