Can we ignore the same old questions please?

I visit these boards every day. I enjoy reading up on what's new and engaging in the discussion. However, one thing really annoys me.

Every day, without fail, there is at least 1 and usually several threads about the same old type of questions savings/high rate current accounts. On any other message board, posting these would be against the rules and these messages would get deleted by mods telling the user to visit the sticky/wiki. These are a simple search away and there really is no excuse other than laziness for those asking the same things over and over and over and over and over again without even bothering to try a search.

As the mods here don't seem very proactive, I suggest these threads are ignored rather than answered bumping up the same "I have X pounds, which account should I save it in?" threads to the top.

Who's with me?

Have you thought about NOT visiting so often? In my own opinion, MSE doesn't need yet ANOTHER self appointed forum monitor, there's enough already.

Stick to the boards you clearly know about where repeating a question is "against the rules". Alternatively, the basics of a question on MSE is often contained in the title - just jog on by.

For me, it's not repeat questions that are irritating it's self appointed board monitors, patrolling their chosen forums every single day, often several times a day, like armed guards marching up & down!

The whole forum is about savings and investment, so it does irritate me when peoplestart a new thread 'How to invest £20k' etc. Rather than repeat everything on the forum every time someone starts a new thread asking the same questions I just pass it by.

If you were being mugged in the street you might be glad if a self appointed busybody stepped in to help you, instead of saying 'its not my job leave it to the police'.

    1) I don't find a daily visit to boards like this, having a look at the top thread titles and going into those that are of interest excessive. This is subjective, so we can disagree on this.

    2) I am not interested in being a "self appointed monitor". I don't quiet understand what that is anyway, you mention there are many by saying "ANOTHER". I proposed the exact opposite, given the lack of proactive monitoring that we collectively let die redundant repetitive superfluous pointless unneeded and unnecessary (get my drift?) threads.

    3) "Stick to other boards...", "just jug on..."- I welcome your opinion and you are free to disagree but you are sounding like a ... self appointed forum monitor. I will visit what I like, thanks very much.

    4) The best run forums/boards have the system I mention. There is a wiki/section which users are encouraged to read including agreeing to when registering. It prevents basic questions/topics being asked every day. Asking "where do I put X savings" on this board like it is some unique scenario to the person asking when there are several well maintained posts listing/ranking the best accounts available is like asking "first time tourist, where should I visit when I'm in London?" on a London board that lists every type of attraction/day out in a guide.

Sadly, some of the contributors I value most reply to these threads bumping them to the top. Bowlhead actually takes the time to reply in detail to things that have been asked and (s)he has anwered a hundred times (not exaggerating), xylophone posts links to similar which is a good way to put the point across (to those who get it) but even this is somewhat too much for lazy posters who don't put the slightest effort in seeking information widely available.

I agree that it can be frustrating, but I don't think that ignoring the question is the best way to handle it. At worst the forum and its members will look quite rude, and at best the poster will just come back and bump their own post with a "nothing?"-style of post - after all, if they didn't find the answer before they posted, they're not suddenly going to go off and look.

Maybe the sticky post could contain links to threads on popular subjects, though it would need to be kept up to date and, because everyone has a different set of circumstances (which often have to be dragged out of them one by one) the answer to "what should I do with £20k" could be different for each of them.

No response on here is anyone's 'job'. It's voluntary to respond or to just pass it by. The only busybody is the one wishing to encourage the implementation of 'rules' regarding repeat questions.

MSE is a public forum, it doesn't need the bully boy mentality trying to drive people off it. If you don't want to answer a frequently asked question......DON'T. Simple enough to grasp.

To those currently composing a detailed response to my special situation, you will have to start all over again I'm afraid. Just found a quid down the back of the sofa, so now it is £17,284.89 which obviously CHANGES EVERYTHING!
