Guest - why would you be considering a vasectomy given that you only have one child (from recollection) and think that "only" children are spoilt bullies?

Serious question as you seem to be contradicting yourself.

I'm not considering it immediately, it's something that has crossed my mind for the future.

I'm still young, but I suppose as this thread shows, older than some who get it done!

You need to be 100% sure. Vasectomy might be (relatively) painless but surgical sperm extraction definitely isn't. And your bosses at the NHS won't be paying for it either.

If married the persons husband or wife must consent to any form of permanent sterilisation.

    That is not the case.

I was sterilised on the NHS at my own request at the age of 30 with no children. I was married but did not require my then-husband's consent, nor did he have to speak to any of the medical professionals involved.

I was asked if we'd discussed the matter as a couple, which I thought was a sensible question to ask, but that was all.

This was over the course of about two years, as I'd mention it to my GP every time I needed a refill of the Pill and ask him to note it in my records as evidence that it wasn't on a whim. Then when I turned 30 I asked for a referral and was given one, discussed it with the GU surgeon, and job done.

Ex-husband then went on to have a vasectomy a couple of months later via Marie Stopes because we both wanted to be done but he preferred to just spend the money than go through having to convince his GP (not the same GP as mine so we weren't sure how easy that would be). No pain, much faster recovery than mine and all fine although he never did get his follow-up test done!

Yes Ofcourse, it's why I asked for OPs reasons, beyond the obvious.

I'd have to check if the CCG funds vasectomies in my criteria, but I wasn't expecting it on the NHS. - though strictly speaking it's cheaper than providing care for a child

Considering your child become a spoilt bully - shame on you!

And my reference to the NHS paying for the procedure related to reversal/extraction - I don't think any will fund that.

The correct information has already been posted:

"If you have a partner, discuss it with them before deciding to have a vasectomy. If possible, you should both agree to the procedure, but it is not a legal requirement to get your partner's permission."

    That's off the NHS website.

Maybe it used to be a requirement, but it isn't anymore, just like the way women used to have to get their husband's permission to go on the pill, and it used to be legal for husbands to rape their wives. Things do change, sometimes even for the better!

Yes, I did see that. I'm well aware of the NHS advice. My comment was in reference to the post I quoted.

However I'm willing to bet that was the advice 8 years ago as well. Probably just an over zealous doctor.

    Oh I see! Yes indeed.

No no, he won't be. I was simply considering options for the future. Another child would be most welcome, but I've also looked at fostering and adoption.

It was just a general enquiry

Can it be done under a general? I'm not going to lie, the idea of a needle going anywhere near my ballbag to administer the local petrifies me.

I think the local is actually injected into the groin not the scrotum itself
