35 year old man. Getting married soon and we both know that we do not want children. I am considering a vasectomy, and just wondering about familiar experiences. I understand it can be quite painful for a while after the operation, how painful? Any other after effects? Just wondering about general experience.

Obviously I'll be talking to a doctor, but it takes a long time to get an appointment, like weeks!

I'd suggest not bothering with the NHS. The chances of them agreeing to do it is slim to none and will likely come with a fair amount of lecturing and patronising 'advice'.

I'd suggest speaking to Marie Stopes as suggested by another poster. They'll be a lot more willing to listen, you won't wait as long and it's not too expensive, at around £400 I believe.

You went private. The NHS will have guidelines as to who is eligible, age and whether you already have children may be part of the criteria. OP would need to check the guidelines for his area.
That's a shame. It seems very sensible for a man to get a vasectomy if both he and his partner don't want children. Instead the NHS will have to fund a lifetimes contraception for his wife and possibly the costs of anti-natal care if it fails.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Just to add about 99% effective.
Out of 2,000 men who are sterilised, one will get a woman pregnant during the rest of his lifetime.

My brother was one of those 2,000 after being lulled into a false sense of security for 7 years
It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

As they don't want children, presumably to prevent pregnancy.

Yes but there's many other, less intrusive ways to prevent pregnancy...

Which is of no importance as the OP wants the snip.

Not really. OP can use a condom, but other than that every method is intrusive to his wife to some extent.

You could always "pull out" last minute, wear a condom or just put it in "somewhere else".

Anyhows, google indicates the costs are £402 privately. Thats quite cheap i guess.

I was asking a question, crying out loud. If that's the sole reason then fair enough, I was just curious as it's something I was considering too.

Yes to some extent, and mostly less intrusive and less permanent.

Anyway I was just asking for the OPs opinion

    Cheaper than having a child!
