I can't speak for Ireland but in many working class households, before the introduction of the Welfare State, it was important that the men had enough to eat (if anybody did:()because if they couldn't work and provide for their family, everybody in the family might starve.

Yes I think that is a fair assumption of both British & Irish - however I think there is a world of difference between dad getting the biggest chop to the girl children getting whatever scraps where left over after the others had eaten.

What's with all the arguments? :(

If a post like that had been posted about a non white nation then MSE would probably have complaints of racism.

I believe it's a tall story - or child abuse - which can happen anywhere, but It's certainly not an impression I wish people to have of Ireland even if it was many decades ago.

I think it's a terrible story & it offends me greatly.

The very nature that it starts off the wilds of Wexford shows the posters limited knowledge of Ireland.

Tall tale or not, I find it offensive.

People annoying each other on the internet. They're probably all very nice in real life :rotfl:

It happens quite a lot on this board (and also DT )that threads get a bit sidetracked and posters start to argue amongst themselves.

Now I'm getting cross! What do you know about me, my kin and my heritage?

My former mother in law was raised in the narrowest of hamlets in Co Wexford by generations of narrow minded people who could or would not take on board modern thinking even though they themselves applied the standards to their lucrative livestock that they could or would not gift their own women - mothers, sisters, wives, daughters in law.

Kimkim - I'm sorry about what you WISH. I'm only relating what I endured and whether or not you like it, what I have said is true so far as living memories, diaries, photographs and letters support it.

Before you start telling me about Surrey, you ought to know that I was born, raised and lived there (in the rural part!) until I was 50 years old and, talking about this very thread with my mother tonight, I realised that I know many places to murder and get rid of a body far, far away from habitation. It is still possible to live half a mile away from your nearest neighbor in Surrey. Try John Lowe.

Before you get so ruddy offended by me, try looking at the realities of life in rural Ireland before about 1980. In particular look at the atrocities perpetrated by Irish clergy upon almost every disadvantaged group.

By the way, I am myself one quarter Irish, married (twice!) to an half Irish man and all my daughters are Titian haired. One of my daughters is herself married to an Irishman and their two sons are named Liam and Rian.

I believe that you misread my motivation. However, just like you, I love Ireland and honour it's beauty and a worldwide heritage.:)

Whats another word for not believing? Would it be lieing?
Not twisting that, its your words.

Re read that quote. It says I don't believe Lulu is a doormat....Lulu has never said she was a doormat, that was the implication of SKA's post not something the OP said.

So, again, I ask you to point to a post where the OP has been accused of lying....rather than deliberately misrepresent a post for your own ends.

Well my 100% Irish blood trumps your quarter & some ex in laws.....
I also do live in Surrey, in a village - odd thing you mentioned above, is that some sort of threat???

Not sure how the Catholic Church has come into this now unless it's to remind people how primitive/bad the Irish are?
We've had the girl children (odd term) eating the table scraps now we have the perverted priests brought out - that however is unfortunately sadly only too true.

PS - we don't have hamlets in Ireland.
