As @Grumpelstiltskin suggested, I'd tap up a local auction housr first if possible. Most will let you send photos first before even having to visit.
Maybe collection only options for fragile things on fleabay as a lot of carriers won't insure fragile items, or charge the GDP of Luxembourg to do soFeb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

Also, as I learned from selling on the bay, if it's very old and your buyer is asking for airmail, be aware, it may break in transit. Cost me a lot of money once. Eve

I've sold Waterford (and other) glasses on fleabay - if buyers want it they will be willing to pay the postage costs, I've found - but it honestly doesn't go for too kuchen. Still worthwhile - but you might find you're clearing max £15 from a mint boxed pair of glasses, depending on the design/ type of glass/ popularity. And probably still more than on fb00k - although that is always worth a quick punt as thee are no fees/ couriers to worry about
Silver - I ended up selling some old random spoons etc for scrap value in the end.

The glasses I am looking at £ 50 for a matching set of 6. It is worth nowhere near what was paid for it, although it has been used maybe 5 times in the last 30 years if that. You know I would keep it, and use it, if I did not have lunking great teenagers who lob stuff into the washing up bowl like it is a slam dunk at a basketball tournament. So it is probably just my own fault for not training them properly.I am having a bit of a wobble at the minute. You see, I have realised the estate is not just s/g's, it is also my g/father's. .. as she inherited all his worldly wealth as well, and 2/3rds of it is going to her brother and sister who she has seen maybe 5 x each in the last 20 years and they could not even be bothered to go to the funeral.I got a bit annoyed about it , and then got annoyed at myself for being a greedy cow. After all it was her stuff, she could have given it all to the cats home. I feel like an ungrateful baggage. but still, it is chaffing a bit.4/10/22One Year Mortgage Free Yay!

I only use my Waterford for high days and holidays - it comes out for Xmas etc - I'd never part with it as I love it - it's so pretty! (a more modern, although now discontinued, design and my great grandparents were from Waterford) it's a pain as it's only hand-wash- but my lot know to handle it appropriately- and there are matching tumblers (ok, for whisky as an original purpose!) for smaller people (and even then not until secondary age - the weight and size of glass is too much for them before)
If you love it and it makes you happy and you would occasionally use them maybe keep them? - or buy something in particular with the money if you sell - then that new joyful (maybe frivolous?) thing can be part of the memories?
I have a whole (small) kitchen cupboard devoted to my Waterford- and I actually have very few cupboards, so it's a very deliberate choice for me to keep it (although I did sell the sherry glasses - I was never going to use those....)
Family and money etc are a huge 'thing' to deal with - and often more complicated by second and subsequent relationships. Hopefully sG made g/f happy whilst he was alive? And it doesn't sound like she was frivolous with his money after his death? (More the opposite) - but still so hard to deal with - that's the last connection to your g/f - and grandparents are very, very special people. Huge hugs, f0xh0les XxI am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £206 -
@foxholes you are not being a greedy cow you are grieving for both Step Gran and your Grandfather. It does seem unfair that SG's 2 siblings are going to profit so handsomely from your grandparents' savings especially as they seem to have done so little to have maintained the relationship over the years.
We have Dartington crystal wine glasses and tumblers. We also have my grandparents' canteen of cutlery which we use alongside the crystal glassware for high days and holidays all are lovely to use and make the celebrations more special as we remember loved ones. Yes, they are a pain as we need to hand wash them but it is not daily and I feel worth the effort. I have found my normally slapdash children are careful with them and the only breakages were many years ago by drunken friends.

@f0xh0les you're grieving for them both, not greedy. As @greent says, hopefully SG made GF happy when they were together (mostly
) and if she felt strongly about her siblings (or indeed he did if they were so absent when they were both alive) they could have adjusted their wills and wishes accordingly - it's not up to you to feel a certain way about their choices.

You are not unreasonable in your wobble or your annoyance. & you are not greedy or baggage, yo are being considerate & sensitive of how she would want her & your grandfathers things dealt with or how you would want yours dealt with.
A very wonderful mentor and close friend I lost 9 years ago had saved & used (probably even repaired) much of his parents furniture (all pieces that are coming back in now) that his sister would have happily skipped, he lived simply apart from his pride and joy cars & would have fitted in well on mse as his money strategies amassed not an insignificant amount for him. He had a similar if not lesser relationship with his sister to s/g & siblings, & told me he was happy for it all to benefit the local cats home but didn't write a will. I offered to sort a lot in the house for her as the house was full of things that wouldn't look more than rubbish to most people but were significant in his areas of interest. I was declined & I believe it all went to those who shouted loudest/smarmed up to the sister & paid as little as they could get away with or was binned, I think he would have turned in his grave at how it was handled, someone who had one of the cars touted it about and sold it on on friends reputation (to the extent it was on a rebuilding classic cars tv show as the star example). I still feel sad about it & only ever received, & would have wanted, memories (which were tarnished), he wasn't blood or marriage so you are perfectly within your rights to feel chaffed.
Auctions would probably handle shipping with suitable protection where buyers aren't local to save you that concern.
& congrats on accepting an offer on the house

@f0xh0les I think I would put all the waterford and china into an auction house with the silver if you are sure you don't want to keep it. You do have to pay a percentage of the sale but you can set a minimum price, if it doesn't reach that price you don't pay anything, and you won't have the bother of dealing with the postage etc. I am certain there will be an auction house in your area.3

OOPS! I got reported for using the F word. and my post deleted, so it has been edited to cause less offence‘Today's trials and tribulations were ........ a letter from s/g's health insurance people asking for a death certificate that I had already emailed them over a month ago, but were pretending they did not receive, (so how did they get my address and phone number on file? are they watching me? should I be worried? stalked by SAG4), they would not tell me if she had a policy claim, or if she had a life insurance policy with them either, until they had checked that she was really no longer with us. I am to wait for a letter.... at some point.... twiddling my thumbs Followed by some nonsense letter from the Child Tax Fetishists, who want to know if I have worked at any point this last tax year, but they do not count work that lasts less than 4 weeks for some bizarre reason. I have worked graduation week twice. I tried!! Will have to ring them and see what they can do on the phone line that I cannot do on Gov.awful.uk. Just so they can say 'No, you do not qualify for anything' Solicitors were informed we have a buyer for the house, and the EA was going to contact them today as well. In other news, I have roasted a big tray of BNS and various fridge-bottom root veg for quick and easy lunches for the next few days, I am doing well on the dieting, but it is slow going when you are an impatient nutjob.
Went to The Wading Bird Store and got some bargains that mean I should not have to shop for much at all, and that the kids have snackage for half term (7 school days and counting). Playing with the idea of going over and moving some boxes down to in-laws house/bringing some more home with me, and getting an auction house in to remove the big furniture. Or I can leave it until the long summer holidays..... the house will not complete until mid-August.’
So rang the Fetish line yesterday, did all the automated questions, gave dob, NI, address, etc to be informed We cannot take your call as we are busy. Goodbye.Rang back, to get a This Service Is Not Available message,..I think we might have broken it. By trying to use it.
