The notes in the mental health discussion were the catalyst not the cause of the name change.
It's been something I've been looking to do for a long time (originally I intended that I would change them regularly) - I've also changed how many stars are needed now the site's been going longer.
It really isn't a big deal - its not about banning language on the site - it just seemed a good point for a change
Having followed your TV programmes and appearances I really credited you with far more common sense than to pull a stroke like this. I certainly thought you had more about you than to bend to nonsensical political correctness. By doing so you have insulted and upset many people who are loyal members of this site.
The original epithets were light hearted, and no-one in the real world would have been remotely upset by them. Look at the poll.
The terms 'nerd' and 'geek' are far more insulting and disparaging. MrsS administers a large e-mail system for a huge local authority, with many thousands of users. When I mentioned this she informed me that 'geek' (which you now call me) is an insult which is actually filtered out by the system she administers. The definition she gave me was along the lines of an earlier poster, and I am now more annoyed than before. What have us regular users done to upset you and to deserve this lack of respect? You may be a SuperGeek but I'm not!
You are not infallible, Martin. You have got this badly wrong. Why not just put your hands up to it, do the decent thing and put it right?0 -
I agree with you MrSmartprice. I feel that allowing people their own sigs allowed their personalities to show through, it made this site more human somehow. If I want to be a geek or a nerd then I will call myself that, calling people by a group name robs them of an identity, we are not numbers we are people - fascinating, interesting people each with something to contribute with our own unique life and each of value.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0

What am I now???
Edit: Better than Geek I suppose.0 -

I really cannot believe that people are genuinely upset by the change of names.
It hilarious.
I'm sorry- it really is.
Nerd & Geek insulting?

I'm rather annoyed about some of the above posts. Of course we want tags that make people happy. Yet some people were upset by the use of soem of the terms. It wasn't the cause of my change it was the catalyst.
Voting on this doesn't work.
This isn't a majority rule issue. These are fun names on the website.
As can be seen elsewhere, we're trying to start helping the millions with mental health and debt issues - a hidden, underresourced, undermanaged issue that deserves much more attention than it gets.
If 10 people don't use the site or forum and miss the resources because of these fun titles - then it isn't worth it - we should be using different titles - even if everyone else thinks they are fine.
So to those who are saying "i've lost respect with you for this" well then you have poor judgement. We've changed some fun names in a chat forum websites - and stopped upsetting a very tiny number of sensitive fragile people - you know what - I can still sleep at night having done that.
We're trying to get fun names that everyone either likes or doesn't bother with - please focus your energies on that.
This pettiness is beneath what this forum is set uyp for - to help each others take on companies. Those who are making a big issue of this and thinking a call to arms is needed - really need to take a step back!
