I wasn't offended when I was a Mad Maverick, nor lately when I was a "Bonkers".

What does offend me though is peeps who take it upon themselves to stipulate for others what should. The word "mad", after all, no longer applies to persons afflicted by mental illness because we have moved well beyond that blanket description.

But then, don't let that get in the way of those who zealously go looking for offence.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I think the problem some people have, is that they have had people call them 'mad', 'insane', 'crazy' and similar things as insults. I know I have, and to be honest the do kinda hurt. Its hard to be called things like that when mental illness isn't something you've asked for, or brought on yourself. I know the nicknames here weren't meant as an insult or an attack, but I can see how someone who has been insulted with those words before wouldn't like to be called that again. Some people are good at deflecting insultings, but some of us are a bit more sensitive. If I can make a small change to stop someone going through unnessercary suffering, I will. The benefit they get is greater than the inconvience I feel.

I appreciate you coming on to put a contrary view. I have to say that I am a little worried as surely any descriptive remarks could be defined as potentially insulting to someone and was wondering where people should draw the line. You say 'I know the nicknames weren't meant as an insult or attack but can see how someone who has been insulted with those words wouldn't like to be called that again' but where ARE they being called that. Are people (who by their very nature would have had to have posted a considerable amount on this board before being 'awarded' those titles) really that sensitive and how much benefit do they really accrue.

I'm not trying to be accusatorial, I'm genuinely trying to find out although I suspect a chat forum wouldn't be a suitable venue to discuss this in much detail. At various stages in my life I've been called fat, skinny (when I lost weight) then fat (after I put it all back on:D ) had derogatory remarks made about my alleged fondness for sheep (being Welsh) and spent twelve years as a football referee where I took my fair share of insults.

Well !!!!!! me. I get called Geek/Nerd in real life as well.

    Whats next then? Ridiculous!

I cant believe this site can completely change posting status on the back of a solitary person being offended.
  • Well it's just ridiculous ( I was going to say bonkers, but obviously that would probably get me a warning!!!)..can't believe this is happening. In our day and age when there's supposed to be freedom of speech. When will the PC police stop?? This country is becoming more of a nanny state every second!!
  • just had a long think about this and i can honestly say i cant remember any time when the word "mad" or bonkers or such like was usd in a degrading way around me, or anyone i know or one the telly. I think these words cover much more now (like Q was saying...) BUT i constantly see on the tv people being called nerd/geek... or prtrayed as these in a VERY insulting way... so has the switch over to these terms (which i dont particulary like) meant that the site is insulting more people? *rambles* sorry ive rambled a bit :o

I wish I was able to ignore insults as well as other people, but no matter what I try they still seem to hurt :)

While I wasn't offended by the old nicknames, and I doubt many people were, some people did find them offensive. It is tough to draw the line, but I'd rather err on the side of caution than risk causing offense. I think things like mad, looney and things are alright when you know someone, but shouldn't really be said at people who you don't know very well.

I think one thing that it is worth taking in to account are the people who are most likely to be offended by being called mad are people who have mental health problems. I can only talk for myself, but I know that when I'm very ill, I am hyper sensitive, and comments and nicknames that wouldn't normally bother me suddenly hurt very much.

You're not allowed to call yourself a rambler. :naughty: You might offend folk who enjoy long walks in the country. ;)
