It is not simply for shopping, if the disabled person needs urgent need of the loo etc, to be in a parking space somewhere would not be helpful, Can you imagine a 90 yr old trying to cross a car park in a rush to go to the loo because amongst all their other ailments they also have IBS.
Yes, The BB system needs a complete overhaul, maybe Prime Minister May amongst all the other things she has promised, will carefully look at it.
For a parking company and then a judge to rule against the OP is a complete disgrace0 -
Been there done that with my late Mum for years but I never, ever, parked in any disabled bay leaving Mum just sitting there like my personal 'Blue Badge' in human form. That is NOT what a disabled bay is for!PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

in that case use the space under the EA2010 and take the protected person to the loo
that is a valid use of the space by the person with protected characteristics and is a viable reason for a carer to make use of such a disabled parking space , blue badge or no blue badge (the blue badge is irrelevant other than to try to comply with the local parking rules)
my late mother had IBS and eventually bowel cancer and that was a valid reason for using her BB in these types of circumstances
sitting them in the car and leaving them there is not
the EA2010 is the law that applies (reasonable adjustments etc)0 -

Ah well, plenty do, saw it earlier this evening in a M&S car park, there was even a Euro Car Park gorilla walking around who took no notice, probably because it looked like he was smoking a joint.
I was offered a blue badge to use when my mother was in the car. This was well before her dementia kicking in big time. The council were fully aware that if the car was parked in a standard space, she would not be able to get out of the car so I do not use her as a blue badge, she/me was given one
So would the scenario be that I drop her off in a disabled bay, then go and find a normal space, then walk back to find she has gone walkabout ..... don't think so0 -

I totally agree with you but tell me, if you are the registered keeper, the blue badge is issued to you and you let another person drive the car, are you saying that you cannot sit in your own car with a blue badge registered to you ?0 -

nope, I am not saying that at all
you do not even need to own a car or be registered with a car in order to obtain a Blue Badge
THE BADGE IS ISSUED TO THE PERSON NAMED ON IT
it can be used by the protected person in ANY vehicle
my mum had one, never drove OR owned a vehicle in her life , but the family were all "carers" and took turns dealing with her requirements. I was always the one they asked for advice on these issues as I have held one for about 25 years (since the OB scheme started and long before the DDA1995 or the EA2010)
before these private parking companies started their tactics, hospitals, surgeries , retail parks , supermarkets and other car parks always adopted the same rules as on public roads
its the plague of these modern private parking companies and their "rules" that have changed this aspect and the BB has failed to keep up due to government inaction , hence what I told the survey by DCLG last year0 -
Coupon-mad wrote: »That is abusing a disabled bay. The entire point is 'accessibility' and the need to reach adjacent premises on foot/wheels, not parking the bus in a 'special bay' because you can and just sitting there while an able bodied person shops. That is selfish, and bay-blocking.
No. But if she's intending to sit there (and if she won't wander off) then use a normal bay because you are the person on foot and you (being the only person leaving the car) don't need a bay close to the premises.
Accessibility yes, that is why my council gave her a BB on the grounds that she would not be able to actually get out of the car, she could not do that in a normal parking space.
And, not sure where the able bodied person does shopping comes from, the OP who started this post said she popped in for a sandwich for her dad.
Before my mum went into a home, I would take her shopping each week. More often than not she started feeling ill (a dementia problem), so I would take her back to the car whilst I continued the shop. This was Waitrose, the parking company was Horizon who had a full time warden who got to know my car and even directed me into a disabled bay as there was a BB on the dashboard, he was well aware that after some 15 mins she would be sitting in the car all by herself.
My first post on this thread was to say how disgusting the parking company in bournemouth are, let alone that judge, nothing changes0 -

But not for the disabled person to simply act as a personal Blue Badge for their carer to save THEIR legs. If there is no intention for the disabled person to get out of the car at all, then that's disabled bay blocking.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Again agreed. Interesting news tonight with the new government appointments, can't help thinking that Mrs May worked this out months ago, let us hope she kicks the @rse of the DCLG to get rid of these scammers and cowboys0
