    I usually make sure that gifts are sent or delivered by me before or on a birthday, but I don't have an issue with anyone giving me a late birthday gift. One of my friends who is a loveable scatter brain has often forgotten to bring my present, even when she has called to see me on my birthday. I have a December birthday and the funnest was when she kept forgetting my gift every time we met up and it was a lovely hand knitted scarf and gloves she got from a craft sale that I eventually got in July (lol, she kept my card as she said it would do for my next birthday).

    I feel terrible i forgot my sisters birthday, there was a lot of stuff going on and when i remembered it was too late. i could have sent her a card with my brothers birthday/fathers day card but i felt it was too late, so yes 2 months could be seen as too late. Personally i'd accept the gift even if it was late/

    My birthday and my friend's birthday are in January. It was May before we managed to exchange gifts this year! We live in the same town but life just got in the way of us meeting up for ages. It was great fun getting a birthday present in the middle of the year for once :)

    This is one of the most depressing posts I have ever read on here. :( A nightmare to buy presents? Vulgar? What on earth is vulgar about buying presents for family? And why do they all have to be expensive and difficult to wrap?

    And your new husband and his family 'don't want to have on spend money on each other.' Why? :huh: That's what families do!

    I also wonder if your experience of 'having' to buy presents - when you were with your ex, is the reason for your hatred of present buying.

    I LOVE buying presents for people. I have a fairly big family: four sisters; many nieces and nephews, and as Torry said, presents don't have to be expensive, and you certainly don't have to spend months getting them, or spend half a day's salary on each one (or whatever it was someone said earlier!)

    I have never seen so much negativity!]

    What they actually said was;
    "No one wants anyone to have to spend money on anyone else" which is totally different from your misquote.
    What families should do is have consideration for each others circumstances and not put financial burdens on other members. I've been in a family where gifts are weighed up and judged based on financial cost, perceived 'taste' etc. It certainly was never the thought that counted.

    Don't forget what Martin says every Christmas, that buying gifts puts people in to the position of being obliged to reciprocate which can put some people into real hardship.

    Do the people you love buying presents for feel obliged to buy back?

    Back to OP, no I wouldn't care less, unless it was obvious that they'd picked up the gift from a motorway service station en-route.

    I think we can all agree to differ in these circumstances no need to judge people. Bit of a first world problem really.
