I saw a comment a few days ago where someone had received several outbound calls from retentions with different offers. Is this a regular occurrence? The one time I've turned down a retentions offer I didnt receive any further calls, so it'd be interesting to know how likely I might be to get a second callback.

I put my cancellation in yesterday, as all inbound retentions could offer were prices higher than what my bill is already due to increase to.

That’s always been my understanding but on another forum, people reporting they getting more than one call should they turn down the first offer.  I personally would try and negotiate on that first call.  Have a figure in mind and see if they can get near it
  • Originally I was offered the 100mps Broadband service (No Phone Line) for £24.50 after the price rise in March 2022. I called back a few days later and cancelled the service. I got a call back from the Retentions Department 2 days later and after complaining for 10 minutes I managed to get the 100mps service for £19.00 a month with no price increase in March. I have estimated that I have been paying about £5.00 a month too much for this service for the last 2-3 years due to price rises and not getting a really good deal when I sign a new 18 month contract. So to get it for £19.00 a month is pleasing. If you want a good deal you definitely have to cancel.

M100 broadband (and weekend calls) is £42 now, and will be £50 in April. Called them tonight quoting Vodafone's 100mpbs package for £22 (available for my postcode via MSE comparison). Virgin said the best they can do is £37.

My problem is we have been so long on cable here (over 20 years) that the speed I am quoted from alternatives to Virgin is never ultrafast (only up to 60-ish mbps). I think that's because the BT line into our property has not been connected or upgraded since the 20th century!

I'm not sure what to do next: contact Vodafone and see if I can get the100mbps speed?
As I’ve stated on the past few pages. You have to cancel to get the best deals! Only way to get proper retention deals is to cancel. They’ll call you back within the week.
My dad put cancellation in last Thursday 27th, no call back, so they losing a £1,200 contract. And yes his preferences are ticked to contact him
Update now been called and sorted. £68 maxit tv, sky sports Hd, 200mb bb.  Was going up to £132 when his deal ended, quoted £80 from 1st retention offer pre cancellation.   Matches Sky price including cash back, but far quicker broadband.
I’m on the same except SD sky sports. Currently £67 with contract due to end in mid March so will be doing my cancellation call in next week or two. Did you have to push much to get the £80 offer?
The £80 was from the first retentions guy after telling them wanted to cancel.  Cancellation went in, and he was prepared to leave, got call yesterday offering £68. Still think he could have got that down if he had waited, but he was happy with that.  I pay £56 for that with sports in HD, so be interesting chat when mine ends in summer
Oh right I misread your post as thought were currently paying £68 and had accepted £80….was a bit higher than I was hoping for so glad to read that was not from outbound retentions but the initial offer pre cancellation. Looks like worse case scenario I should be able to get a similar price to my current £67 then once I cancel.

One other thing, by saying could get down further if he had waited, are you saying that if you turn down the offer on the first outbound retentions call then outbound retentions usually or always call again with an even better offer? I once had a call few years ago when I didn’t accept but they didn’t call back …… in end I managed to engineer the same outcome as the price offered in that first outbound call by going through process again.

I had similar thoughts re outbound calls so be interesting to see any feedback here.

Oh I’ve already asked you the same qu before reading this! I’m inclined to accept the offer on first outbound call if it’s decent to avoid having to go through process again (and the risk that they don’t call back next time).

So my original deal was due to expire next month

    100mb BB
    Phone Weekends
    £27

Was due to go up with the price increase to £55

Spoke with cancellations, her first offer was to keep the package and the new price be £27.25

I can live negating both increases with a 25p increase on my existing bill
  • Was on 100mb BB and Phone Weekends for £23 pm.   Cancelled due to price increase and my contract was running out in April. Got a call back two days later offering same package for £22pm with no price increase for 18 month contract.  Happy with that so accepted.

I have done 3 WhatsApp chats getting nowhere.

Dialled 150, couldn't help, put through to someone else who sounded bored and fed up. Couldn't help me.

I'm near the end of contract with a £50 discount, but I have a virgin media sim.

I genuinely cant afford an extra £55 per month. I asked to drop some services but it doesnt make much difference. The best that can be offered is £99 plus a sim for £25.

I said it was far too much and maybe I needed to cancel, the next thing I'm in the queue again where I was cut off.

    It's very draining this business.

Can I go out of contract and cancel and then can my husband take out a new contract?

If you are in a position, always switch names on contracts, i.e. one time on your name and then next one on your husbands and you should save a fortune getting new customer deals plus using something like TCB.. good luck and go get 'em!

Current Package: M50, about 12 months left
    Current Price: £19.00
    Proposed price rise: +£3.25 to £22.25 (17%)

New price: M100 for 18 months for £13.

So a decent saving and a better package against them just leaving me alone for the next 12 months.

I had seen (via the MSE deals) that community fibre were doing 150Meg for £15.88 in my area, which I didn't expect virgin to compete with a new customer deal. I told them so and tried to leave, so they offered £13. Rather surprised, but happy to take it.

40 mins spent on the phone, the vast majority of which was listening to their (not too bad) hold music.
