After wasting one hour on online chat service ready give 30 day cancel period, I phoned was put through to cancel team, I was offered mix tv, 50mb broadband and anytime calls for £42 for 18 months, don't know if that's a good deal or not but I'm happy, and much better than paying £67 as I was now out of contract.

I tried chat yesterday, best they could do was the renewal rate of £135 per month, will be cancelling at the 30 day point on the 23rd June.

M50 Fibre Broadband only. Very happy with the service, actually getting a reliable 50Mbps compared to other providers where I found what you actually get on the speed test is half (if you're lucky) of that advertised.

Initially £26 pcm over 12 months, less a £75 bill credit, a £50 amazon voucher through broadband genie and a £30 quidco cashback (via BB genie). So that's equivalent £13.08 pcm in the first year.

After contract it was due to go up to £46.50 pcm.

Saw Vodafone's 63Mbps for equivalent £17.50 pcm, so rung virgin up to cancel with c.4 weeks to go on the contract.

Was offered £24 pcm for 18 months, but I told them that wasn't good enough, compared to vodafone. Was then offered a further £5 off, bringing it to £19 pcm. Accepted that, rather than switching to vodafone for the sake of £1.50/month.

Still year 2 is £5.92 a month more expensive than year 1, but I think £19 pcm is a decent price? I expect there is a cooling off period for a couple of weeks if I could have done better or there is an alternative?

Getting slightly concerned!!! Didn't get anywhere by threatening to cancel - so did cancel - on the basis that I would get the better deat - but also said to the rep at the time that I "may as well sign up in my wife's name as a new customer" (to get more for less!). So that happened at the end of May - and my disconnection is due to happen in a week now - still haven't received any jiffy bags for the equipment - but I guess that's not too urgent - I've since called them to "complain" about my final bill - my cancellation notice wasn't quite 30 days before my contract ended - and whilst on that call they told me that my phone disconnection had been put on hold as I said I'd want to keep my number - when I reiterated my plan to get my wife to sign up and request that number I was told that it would only be held if I transferred to a new supplier - signing up as a "new" customer with Virgin would mean a new number. I know it's a bit old hat - but we do need to keep the number for various reasons.
Anyway - I haven't yet had any call from retentions - I know others have sometimes had them "at the last minute" - so I'm still holding out hope - but at what stage do I "blink" - and call back? Advice appreciated.
    Thanks

Leave it for as long as you can. This happened to me and on the last day i got a email with a much better price so i excepted it. Also in the past what i have done is to leave it till the last day then give them a call telling them you will except there offer. Then give it a few days and cancel it again you then have another 30 days for them to call you back with a better offer

Very similar for me, but with a twist.

The VM rep I spoke to said they weren't doing outbound calls, mainly due to staffing/Covid, I think.

At first they could only offer £35 or something (I didn't listen too well once I heard £30). The cancellation team improved it to about £25, which I also declined. After several minutes of going through the disconnection process, I was offered 50Mbps for £19 a month. Only an 18 month contract, so not as good as Vodafone, but at least I won't have the hassle of changing suppliers & arranging installation.

Can you cancel via Chat, or do you have to call up?

Would I be right in thinking that Virgin's deals are getting less attractive. Just been on Topcashback to see what the rates are for "new customers" and noticed that "no cashback is available for TV Bundles" - only BB & Phone.

Also, in terms of getting callback from Retentions - it hasn't happened and my disconnection is imminent.

A few weeks ago, I gave notice to Virgin Media and it took 4 days before VM disconnections bombarded me with calls, 2 per day for a week, so they are still making calls to retain customers.   I didn't bother answering as I'd signed elsewhere but pre-notice I did get VM to offer £41/month for M200 & phone.  Too much for me, so after over 25 years away from BT, I'm back with them.

To be fair to Virgin (and those it took over), VM proved amazingly reliable over the decades and always delivered excess in speed (typically 10%), so a bit of a leap into the unknown with the dreaded Openreach, but so far (4 weeks) so good.

If I decide to shift again, I'll have the opportunity of being a newbie to VM, or simply swap ISP on Openreach.   That should help keep costs down.
  • My bill has crept up and up and eventually I've called to see what they could do. I only have 200meg broadband and the mix TV channels. I've found by the time I get to page 2 and 3 of the EPG, there's not much I actually watch. A lot of things I could watch on Freeview anyway.

The best they could do was a £9 discount, taking my bill down to £56 which I thought was a pretty stingy offer. The only way they could get it down further was to take a phone line which I have no desire or need for. Even after they'd put me through to a second person, they could only offer me the same discount. Maybe I was expecting too much?

They've put my cancellation through so I'll see whether they come back with anything. If not, I'll return to BT again. I was with them previously when I switched from Virgin.
