Thanks - I've decided to stick with EE for myself but I've ordered a giffgaff sim for my son because I want a cheap PAYG deal for him when he starts secondary school in september. I don't think he'll be using much data but I want him to be able to call and text when necessary.

Giffgaff should be "OK" for calls but not that cheap on PAYG.

Three's 321 PAYG is about the best value PAYG @ 1p per MB, 2p per text and 3p per min calls. Three and EE own MBNL and use it to provide their respective mobile services.

There's also an option to toptup from £5 after the initial topup and every time you topup 150MB free data is provided that lasts 30 days that won't eat your credit. If you topup more than once in the 30 days the free 150MB data is queued until the first free amount is used or its 30 days expires. Also you get InTouch app that allows calls/texts to or from your mobile number over Wifi if there's no mobile signal.

My kids use Three now after trying giffgaff.

Thanks, that three tariff does look good. I'm happy to spend up to £5 a month for my son and I think he'd struggle to spend it with those charges.

Three PAYG credit doesn't expire so providing you keep the sim active (usually means making at least one call or text every so often 90-180 days?).

Just topup when you need if the credit isn't used each month. There's also a PAYG option to buy add-ons that provide a package allowance but these expire after 30 days even if you haven't used the allowance.

If you only use PAYG credit to make calls or use low amounts of data be aware that giffgaff is increasing its PAYG prices for UK calls and data in about 3 weeks time (23/3/2016)

Calls will increase by 50% from 10p per minute to 15p per minute.

Data is currently 20p for the first 20MB each day and then 20p per MB for the remainder of that day. The change will probably affect low users the most with data moving to a flat 5p per MB. So anyone using 20MB each today will pay 20p but from 23/3 it will cost £1 for the same.

It is also changing the £5 goodybag and capping the minutes to 100 rather than 100 plus additional minutes earned for incoming giffgaff calls.

I don't have a passport, so not good for me. Currently use them for a second phone.

I've not seen the recent Giff Gaff price increases updated in the MSE mobile comparison chart. I think it's important to update this info because the price increases really affect GiffGaffs competitiveness.

I'm a £5 Hokey Cokey goodybag user who is going to leave GiffGaff because of the changes. I think Giffgaff have got their priorities all wrong because these changes will affect many low end users. I joined GG years ago because of the low prices and their focus on members rather than profits so I'm very disappointed about the corporate strategy they seem to have developed.

I'm now looking for the best alternative for someone who uses less than 500 mins, 200 text and 1GB data a month.

The problem with the hokey cokey is that the termination fees giffgaff get from the calling network have been slashed, so they can no longer afford to provide the additional free minutes.

This site has really good reviews of what's available

Indeed, as a very low user I'll need to move elsewhere I think.
