    no its bloody not!

you do NOT need insurance to tax a vehicle!!!!!!

I have just gone thru this with the DVLA , insurance is NOT checked at a PO , the police check it with ANPR

the MID database , same as the police use , do not recognise a vin/frame number , so how can a person in my situation , taking a car/bike for its first mot , and regeresting it with tax , have his insurance checked by a "central database"

A wize person would carry his doccis showing that the "vehicle" is insured on its vin/frame number , and the police would be happy

    I,ve had enough

    and PS:

having no MOT does not invalidate your insurance

That is referring to the continuous insurance enforcement checks that go on all the time now.

You will get caught out with no insurance via CIE, but don't need a certificate to buy your tax.

    (As you keep being told)

As it is said here "Insurance now automatically checked against central database"

Online or the PO ... YOU STILL NEED INSURANCE

    Do read

it just so happens that my son brought his V11 reminder renewal here yesterday so I have just checked it

there is NO REQUIREMENT for an insurance certificate listed on it , not at the P.O. and not online either (there used to be but not now)

it does remind people in small font that "By law , all drivers must be covered by motor insurance when they use a motor vehicle on the road or in any other public place"

for taxing the vehicle at a P.O. or online it requires a valid MOT (or GVT) and the payment, with the v11 if taxing at a PO or the ref number if taxing or declaring SORN online where they use the electronic MOT database to check for a valid MOT

if the vehicle is MOT exempt it requires a valid V112 or V112G form

SO ALTHOUGH IT USED TO BE A REQUIREMENT, IT SEEMS ITS NOT ANYMORE

and that is from the latest V11 which my son only received recently as his tax runs out on 30th june 2016

so no insurance requirement, but it is required at all times , by law, hence the alternative checks

I think it is closed already.

My car could not be taxed for the next 12 months if it was not insured or had a MOT
However I am open to any thoughts as to how they can get road tax without these documents or online proof

having just read my sons latest V11 I agree with you, but I know that in the past it was a requirement to have the insurance document to tax a vehicle

this latest V11 simply states the following

THIS VEHICLE NEEDS AN APPROPRIATE MOT TEST CERTIFICATE

there is no mention of a valid insurance certificate, as most of you are saying, therefore that requirement is no more, end of argument

Guess in the OP's case and a £100 fine, the police do not agree

No insurance is a hell of a lot more than a £100 fine these days - and it very rarely gets served without a court appearance and very often a ban to go with it!
