I said that american recipes are measured by volume, not weight. 8 oz by weight will be different than 8 oz by volume.
To measure by volume, use a fluid measuring cup, or get an american cup set - they are quite cheap. That's why it looked like a lot of flour. I gave you fluid oz equivalents rather than weight equivalents so you could use a liquid measuring cup.

And you can have 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of raisins in an american recipe and it will still work. If I thought the recipe was dodgy, I would have checked that the measurements were correct. I'm canadian (and a former chef) and use american measures all the time, not weight, unless the receipe is measured that way - they don't really convert from 1 to the other.

You'll probably be luck this time! Its also why it took so long to bake.

    Ahhh...I don't do stuff by volume - I've got scales! It's an ounce - a measurement of weight. :p

And what makes you think it's an American recipe? I've no idea where it originated.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

6oz sifted icing sugar and 2oz softened butter, beat together & spread on cake. Don't blame me if you don't like it.

  • because american recipes give measurements exactly like it has. An ounce can also be by volume, as when you measure out 8 oz (or a 1/2 pint) of milk into a glass measuring jug.

    Hi

    2oz Butter
    4oz Icing Sugar
    10ml hot milk

Beat butter until soft (unsalted is GOOD) gradually beat in icing sugar milk and any flavouring.

Will fill and top an 18cm round cake so probably top yours beautifully

Wouldn't that be a fluid oz?
