Is it normal to give your new spouse a present of any sort anyway?

Well it has been for at least 40 odd years, as my parents gave each other a present on their wedding day.

Tbh, I would much prefer a new kitchen rather than some jewellery. Maybe the woman in question really wanted one, and if so then yes, it is a good gift.

You mean apart from the ring I should have gotten something on my wedding day?! Damn!

Would you be thrilled that your husband (or wife) to be bought you a lovely new kitchen as a wedding present for you ?

Yes I would have been utterly thrilled - probably overwhelmed.

My wedding present to my wife was a used gearbox for her car, bought from the local scrapyard - her present to me was the tools I was missing in order to fit it.

The day after our wedding I spent 6 hours fitting it so that we could drive away on our honeymoon (camping) in North Yorkshire.

It's news to me and I've been married 17 years this month.

Well I think that's dead romantic!

And very brave - not only buying each other practical presents which benefit you both, but then heading to Yorkshire! Apparently they take a dim view of such things there ;)

I've been married twice in the last 40 years and neither had presents involved, nor did any of my friends who married in the same period.

    Perhaps another regional thing?

A brand new kitchen as a wedding gift wow that's a lovely thing to do.
It beats a kettle or microwave and I would rather have a new kitchen than jewellery.
Your wife is a very lucky lady a nice kitchen doesn't come cheap.

I would have been happy had I been the bride, apart from one thing. £9k would cover my "dream" cooker but would only leave enough to buy a toaster and maybe a box of tiles.

Perhaps? Although I doubt it somehow. I know lots of people who've done it, and not just from the region I come from.
