Happychappy and Wig.....I intend getting over to a BCA auction in the north of England, never having bought via auction before......got a top ten tips for buying off BCA, pitfalls, things not to do/do?

Am looking for 2/3 year old 3 series BMW, plus assume its totally safe to buy rental/lease company cars?

I see you can pay by debit card....how does this work?

    Vat qualifying/marginal means what?

Consequences of no log book....reason why not, from lease company?

Mileage is warranted by whom, how reliable?

For BMW you can get a read from cars computer out of what needs done service wise, can you ask for this or check in vehicle, how might it work?

    Thanks, P

    Hi Parisien

Most of your questions are answered in the BCA guide

I dont know about the debit card purchase, however, I understand you can only pay up to £9k at any one time, so therefore with a debit card, you simply leave all your money in your account and pay on the card. It is traceable for the money laundering reg.

The log book is usually not a problem if it hasnt been surrended for whatever reason i.e lease company lost it, finance company repo, etc, it usually takes four to five weeks to obtain a V5, but many private punters stay away when no V5 is present. Most are simple transactions with DVLA, there can be problems in a few cases, but your buyers fee covers you for these issues.

The mileage is only warranted if announced at the time of sale as warranted, listen carefully and confirm if necessary with the rostrum and check with the catalogue which you can purchase on the day.

The VAT/Margin is a vehicle where you cannot reclaim the VAT back even if registered, the description by BCA may help, but again it will be announced at the rostrum
The VAT rules on purchasing a used vehicle are:-
    (i) Used Motor Cars: Although all used cars bear VAT it is not usually
accounted for separately and VAT is not generally added to the hammer
price. In some circumstances (qualifying cars) the VAT element may be
broken out from the hammer price and shown separately. This is done
to enable a VAT registered buyer, purchasing the vehicle for a qualifying
purpose, to recover the VAT. In all other cases (margin cars) the VAT is
not shown separately and cannot be recovered.
Qualifying Cars include cars bought by:-
Leasing and contract hire companies – Cars for onward lease/rental.
Daily rental companies – Cars for onward rental.
Taxi firms/driving schools – Cars solely for business use.
Fleet operators – Cars that have no private use (e.g. pool cars).
Dealers buying for any of the above purposes or for retail, from any
of the above on a tax invoice.Cars that are not eligible for recovery of VAT even if purchased by a VAT registered person and bought on a tax invoice are called Margin
    Cars.

You will pay a buyers fee which covers the possibility of the vehicle being a stolen vehicle, subject of HPI, mileage haircuts etc.

If you can really try and narrow down the make, model, gear, fuel, age etc, I will do you a search or otherwise access the BCA auctionview pages.

Best of luck, it really is worth going the week or so before, sit on your hands and watch the performance, it can be interesting.:D

  • Hello,

I've done the auction thing before, a few years ago now, and I'm now back in the market for a new car - I've been to Blackbushe a couple of times recently on scouting missions, and as I'm after a BMW 320 d ES/SE, what should I be expecting to pay?

To be more specific, I'd be looking for:

    BMW 320d ES/SE Touring
55 plate or newer (newest shape)
    Diesel
    Manual Transmission
reasonable mileage (up to 65k - but willing to move on this)

I saw a 05 plate Touring (320d) go for £5350 a couple of weeks ago - it had
94k on the clock - is this an exception, or the norm?

Are the touring versions cheaper generally than the saloons?

Thanks in advance for any info...

This is a long shot I know but here goes..........

I am looking for a Peugeot 207 5 dr with a panoramic roof. A friend has tipped me off that a fleet of 12 went to Manheim auction late last week.

I am guessing that some of these are going to be in tomorrow's Bristol closed auction (by virtue of the number of 207s due in the auction tomorrow)

I am also guessing that when they say "closed" they really do mean closed and only dealers can either bid or do the internet viewing thing?

Is there anyone out there who has access who can check if my guesses are right?

I know it's girly but as it's to share with my daughter my preference would be for a black one,

Can anyone help? as I said I know it's a long shot..

    Many thanks,

    A

3 Series Tourings are total lemons in the trade and fail to make a decent price. So if you're in the market for a small estate car with a good badge then go for one!

Thanks - this is useful to know... any reason that they don't do well in the trade?

my guess would be that the saloon/coupe/sport models are easier on the eye etc...
