Sapphire, I genuinely don't see any way that Turkey will be joining the EU with the next 15 - 20 years, I don't think Germany has any great enthusiasm for them joining either, given the large Turkish community there, it would be likely to be the destination for a large proportion of any economic migrants who would move from Turkey in the aftermath of joining the EU.

Even if Germany were pushing for it, I think you overstate their ability to force through a policy like that in the face of strong opposition from many other countries within the EU.

Merkel took a big hit to her popularity last year for her response to the refugee crisis and I don't see her repeating the same mistake twice.

Is the Erdogan government even seriously interested in really joining the EU, I would think it would have limited appeal for a ruler as authoritarian as he has become.

Everyone might be playing nice with Turkey at present, hoping they will play a part in easing the refugee crisis, but I wouldn't read much more into it than that.

I do hope you are right, whether Britain leaves the EU or not – but I'm still voting for Brexit. I am in any case deeply uncomfortable with the erosion of democracy brought on by the EU (among other things, as discussed earlier/elsewhere).

Turkey is never going to be part of the EU. They and the EU are well aware of this and have been since their accession bid was launched.

By moving toward EU accession criteria in the past though, they have got some concessions out of the EU. The only people who are "worried" about Turkey are rabid Kippers and professional xenophobes.

and you and mayo are deeply relieved that those non white not christian foreigners aren't going to join, otherwise you would be voting brexit with the hypocritical xeonophobes

I thought the UK were one of the only supporters of EU membership for Turkey. I think we rely on the EU countries for a veto :)
n a visit to Turkey in 2010 our own Prime Minister announced that he would do everything he could to ensure Turkey entered the EU. Speaking as a guest of the country’s Islamist Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, our own PM said, ‘Turkey deserves its place at the top table of European politics – and that is what I will fight for.’

'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

    Along with you, you mean?

No. That would be a cold day in hell.

Do you support free access of the people of Turkey to the UK right now?

I find it eminently unfair that an illiterate Kurdish goat herd is denied access to the United Kingdom when you apparently get to live here forever due to an accident of birth.

maybe: do you advocate total freedom of movement of all Turkish (and other ) people?

This was part of the recent Syrian refugee agreement with Turkey

"Turkey EU membership: Both sides agreed to "re-energise" Turkey's bid to join the European bloc, with talks due by July."

I think it's a dangerous game to reopen talks if there is no EU appetite or intention to allow Turkey to join for decades.

I still don't quite understand EU policy to expand, when it hasn't been able to resolve problems with things like the Euro.

Surely there is a time for consolidation, and to deal with the mounting EU debt?

It would be unlikely that Turkey became a net contributor until a few years after admission.

Is expansion placed higher than economic reasoning?

I advocate total freedom of all Claptons to move to Turkey, or anywhere else with lax background checks, immediately.

I am somewhat less keen on them ever returning.

    indeed so
but do you support total freedom of movement for all people or even just the Turrks to come to the UK.

do you think the 'remain' campaign should lead with the slogan 'everyone is welcome to come to live in the UK '?
