I have my own jute bags for supermarket shopping but I recently bought a coat in Debenhams which was an unplanned purchase and was asked if I wanted to buy a bag. I said I thought that paying 5p for a bag for a large item like a coat was a bit much and the sales assistant said it would be 10p because it was a big bag!

I was sorely tempted to just walk out with the coat over my arm. I wonder whether I'd have been stopped by security?

I've just walked out with a coat rather than pay, nobody said anything.

Haha...that's exactly how I read it too! (Although I'm pretty sure that Torry is not a shoplifter!)

Sainsburys have pulled off a marketing master trick with their 5p bags. They're a great size, they last for absolutely ages and as a result, you see them in every supermarket. I've bought 5p bags from everywhere, from Lidl to Waitrose but Sainsbury's bags beat all others, hands down.

The only problem is, they're too good to use for rubbish. I find that I now have to buy bin liners just so that I have somewhere to put my recycling rubbish, before it goes into my big wheelie bin in the garden.

I put my rubbish in a communal bin area with 10-11 other properties.

Some of the residents use the Sainsburys 5p bags for their rubbish. As they don't have a tie handle, they throw the rubbish anyoldhow and their is rubbish on the floor.

At least one uses the 10p bags for life for bin bags! It's bloody cheaper to use bin liners!

The shop where I work is near to a large council estate. A few colleagues and customers (staff from other shops in area) - not living in the estate have noticed that hardly anyone living on the estate re uses their own bags.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

Your starter for ten and no confering...

Because the amount of plastic you're contributing to landfill, instead of reusing the bags, constitutes a vast annual collection of material that takes by some estimates 500 years to decompose. And that's just one selfish wally. Just imagine if everyone did it. They'd have to impose a levy on plastic shopping bags to try and deter people from doing what you're doing. OMG, they have.

Go on, you little leg puller, you are joking aren't you. Chuckles.

Not to mention the £52 per year spent.
Probably spend £1 a week on bags.

But you're implying that I buy the bags and then simply throw them away. Carrier bags have many many uses, however if you feel that strongly, why not petition for there to be a limited amount of carrier bags "one selfish wally" is allowed to own.

There's nothing worse then an eco-warrior preaching and prattling on. Ok, possibly a vegan.
