In my mind the Bag Charge is purely voluntary !
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Completely disagree with the 5p charge - I now have to spend more on my weekly shop, supermarkets don't lower the cost of other things and I have to buy more foodbags just to put in my kids lunch boxes to put their empty yoghurt pots in etc, so really im just spending more and not using any less plastic

Why can't they put the yoghurt pot etc. in the lunch box and you wash it out when they bring it home?

If it's only a local shop/charity shop that doesn't employ many staff they don't have to charge for carrier bags.

What really gets me is why Costa charge for a paper bag... It's paper. Primark don't charge why did Costa? They just saw an opportunity to make money!

The cynic in me thinks that they won't keep the money, but give it to charity, then add it to the figures of their donations.

It's voluntary because you choose to get a bag. Some manage without a bag or reuse an existing one.

But that's the fun.... I NEVER use my bags in the store I bought them from - though I'm quite sure the store staff don't actually give two hoots :)

I agree, when I take a packed lunch that's what I do unless there's a bin which there should be in school..

You should only need to buy 1 lot of reusable bags and you reuse them until they need replacing.

I do use bags in the store where I bought them but sometimes wonder whether a staff member might accuse me of not having paid for it. If someone fails to scan a new bag on the self service till (and pay their 5p) does it set the alarm off when they leave the store?

You don't have to buy any bags at all. You can use boxes (most stores will give them for free if they have some). You can make your own bags from pillowcases, sheets etc. Backpacks are handy too, and much easier to carry. If you do buy "bags for life" you can use them in any shop. At first, I felt a bit embarassed handing over (e.g.) a Tesco bag at Lidl, but then realised the shop assistants don't care and I don't care if they do :p

Plastic bags are only a teeny tiny proportion of landfill, so it doesn't make a dent in that. However, it might help protect wildlife and reduce the number you see caught in hedges and trees! It also encourages people to start thinking in an environmentally friendly way.

I think carrier bags should cost much more than 5p, but at the minute it is difficult because it isn't really a tax, and while shops are advised to donate the proceeds to a charity, they can just keep it if they like.
